Red Snapper 283/4 question.

My current tripod, an old Velbon from waaaaaaaay back, has a handle for winding the centre column up and down.

From what I can see from the RS 283/4 there is no handle.

Is the column just pulled/pushed up/down, is the any damping...?

Is one system better than another?

I dont think any tripods really use the wind up system anymore. Possibly video not sure though. If you can help it id avoid using the centre column unless you really need to as you will start to lose stability with a heavy lens/camera. One of the reasons i got the redsnapper 324 to replace my manfrotto 190 is that i can have the camera at eye level without using the centre column. Although it is heavier its a lot more stable for what i wanted.

Very many thanks, might I ask which head you got for it, ball or P&T.

i already had a manfrotto ball head that i use, but i went for the deal where you got the free pan head.
 
No crank handle - the central column has a groove in it, in this sits a tightening screw, so you just release this, pull/push and then tighten, its simple and it seems to grip really well.

Note there is also a short centre column you can swap in if using the legs at their lowest elevation so you can get it down low and not have to extend the column.
 
I much prefer the Redsnapper type to the crank handle one that I had many moons ago (actually this thread has rememided me to get it out the loft to give to a friend), not only is it a simpler design it is much quicker to use too.
