Last weekend I headed down to Ascot for the Redbull Air race. I went last year and had a great time and got some shots I was happy with using my 70-200 f2.8 IS and a rented 2xTC. This time I wanted to try and better what I got then and decided what I needed was a bit more reach, particularly to try and catch a bit more of the action further round the course rather than the planes just passing the start/finish gate in front of the grand stand. So I hired a 300mm f4 IS and 2xTVmk3 from lenses for hire to use with my 1Dmk2 giving 720mm including crop factor.
Pretty happy with what I came back with. That combo meant I was stuck at a minimum of f8 which wasn't a problem at all, but it did limit the camera to centre point focus only. It would have been nice to use some of the off centre focus point to get the composition I wanted in camera rather than relying on cropping but I guess that's what you pay the big bucks for!
Focusing seemed pretty good and accurate when I was tracking the planes, but god forbid you ever lose focus as it would take a month of Sundays hunting around to get it back. All in all was good fun though, it would be nice to own a similar setup to go out and play whenever the whim took me, maybe one day...
