Hey folks, I'm about to be made redundant and the company I work for are providing me with £500 to spend on training/re-training. I want to put this money towards some photography training that will help me improve. I've no real intention to turn this into a profession but just want to do something for me. I mainly shoot landscapes but I'm not adverse to the idea of learning portrait techniques or any other styles that will improve my general photography skills.

Have any of you been in the same position and done the same thing?

Really I'm looking for recommendations on training ideally from people with first hand experience of the courses.

I'm enjoying the OCA The Art of Photography at the moment. It's all distance learning stuff so you can go at your own speed and you get assigned a tutor for questions/advice.

There is a thread going on here that you could take a look at. I imagine it's not for everyone, probably people with not a huge amount of experience but have a reasonable grasp of the technical basics. So if that's you, I'd recommend a look.

Whilst I am sorry you are being made redundant, why on earth are you looking at doing something that is not going to help you get another job?

On a separate note if I was an employer and to help soften the blow of redundancy I offer money for retraining I would be pretty miffed off if I found people where using it as a jolly.

Munch, I won't go into the details but suffice to say that the company are paying to support career transition, to refresh existing skills or to develop new skills in other areas. I haven't had my one to one yet and it may be that they won't accept this but there is no harm trying.

Sorry to hear about your redundancy. There is a photography course which the OU ( Open University) do as a distance learning and could gain you some credits which may be useful in the future.

I was made repugnant late last year (Govt cuts) and the best course that I took was to join TP and use the spare time to get out with my camera. Having been taking photos for over 45 years I have been amazed how much I have learned, it's been a complete revelation and provided me with huige rewards during my time off.

I put my "outplacement" money towards a job related course.

yeah I was made redolent a few years back ... the process smelt a bit tbh

not long after that i was made recumbment which was a much more laid back procedure
