Hi Guys,

After missing out on a pristine used Canon 50D I'm thinking about buying a refurbished 50D.

My question is : How much should I be looking to pay?

Went to fondle some bodies again (DSLR bodies) & I definitely prefer the feel of the larger Canons to the Nikons.

7D felt fantastic and to my inexperienced hands MUCH better feel than the Nikon D7000.
On top of that a couple of points is swaying it for me :
- Better Buffer for Continuum Shooting mode
- The possibility of 1 hand operation

Nikon missed a trick with the limitations of the buffer - or I would have one in my hands now.

I have a chance to give up my 50D for a factory refurbished 5D. I have to throw in $200 cash, too. Eventually I want full frame, and I was planning to buy it in a few months, so I was thinking the 50D will be my 2nd camera... Now I am thinking, may be it is better to have a used 5D as a second camera, and enjoy full frame right now...?

What is the advantage, according to YOU, to keep the 50D as a 2nd camera instead of the 5D? If I wait, I may have a full frame later, but the 50D may be better as a backup (newer sensor, better dynamic range, micro adjustments, higher ISO, better crop abilities)... The 50D, however, probably has slightly worse image quality, shallower depths of field (other factors kept constant), cropped sensor and FOV, etc...
 
Personally a crop body as backup makes sense if you use primes as it gives you effectively different focal lengths.
 
WTP, I'm pretty sure that about £550 was the going rate a few months back for used 50D bodies in the run-up to the 60D being released... we were looking for one at work to replace a knackered 20D and it seemed a decent price. Of course, that was used and not a refurb from the factory, so prices might have a slight increase if the latter is what you're interested in - say £600-£650 maximum.

Are you getting the 7D as well as or are you using the D7000 as a comparison to the 50D? The 50D is several years old now so isn't a fair comparison so be realistic with your expectations. Also, have a read about problems with the 50D referring to magenta casts. It's a firmware issue that three of our 50D bodies have suffered from... a factory reset sorted it in the end but it really made us question buying the 50D at the time, especially when we never had a problem with any of our previous Canon bodies. :)

Just out of interest, how's this work?

Overall, the 7D looks to be a very good camera if you end up going that way - built for speed it seems - but it's a different beast to the old xxD bodies, although that isn't a proper comparison because they're aimed at different markets....

50D - less than 500. 50D is a really different from 7D though. You will be missing out of improved sensor, proper AF, video, bigger viefinder, higher fps and many other features. I'd rather get 40D instead of 50D and save a little if money is an issue.
 
A few 50D have been going for around the £450 mark on here over the last month so would say that 450-500 max would be a sensible price depending on condition and shutter count.
Find my 50D great and will keep it when I do go full frame

I figured you could change settings with just your right hand if needed.
With Nikons you need to use both hands, with the ISO, WB being left of the LCD.

I was about to buy a D7000 but didn't because of it's Buffer limitations.
I like the 7D, a lot, but am not sure I should jump in at such a level 1st time....hence the 50D (or 40D) consideration

Secondhand though there's not a lot of difference in cost between the 40D and 50D, but with the 50D you'll get one stop iso better noise and 15mp so you can crop harder if needed.

I get you now - I've forgotten how 'regular' cameras were configured since I got my D2s with the second LCD display and buttons. :)

Unless you're a nostalgia lover like me, go for the newer kit every time - you WILL grow into a 7D :)
 
Now all you have to do is wait patiently for it to arrive.

It'll seem the longest wait ever! Lol.
 
Yeah do all the things you have to while you wait, once the 7d arrives all your time will be taken up getting familiar with all the menu settings and taking lots of great photographs.

Only a few days, but Yes, time has slowed down all of a sudden...
