refurbished bodies

Being in a position now to be able to afford a used Nikon D90, What do TP'ers think of refurbished bodies. They are often advertised as having been sent back to Nikon to have put right whatever was wrong, but does it make sense to buy a camera that you know has had a problem, and I'm sure I read somewhere, probably on here, that Nikon don't refurbish items. What do you think, or should I save a bit (or a lot, being on a pension) longer for a new one, and risk there being new ones available.
 
What site are you buying from? I ask because I'm thinking about swapping over for one.
 
My D90 (from adorama) is refurbished. My D40 before it was a refurb. Both are just fine. I would definitely do it again from a reputable dealer. Mine came with 90 day warranties which weren't needed. I think some offer a year warranty. I didn't have my D40 for a year before I upgraded, so a year would have been plenty.

I've had three refurb Nikon dslrs, the first (a D50) had a handful of actuations on it was done by Nikon themselves and was "as new" and worked flawlessly.

The second, also a D50, was one "refurbished" by JP Solutions, who now do all such work in the UK for Nikon. This one had over 3000 actuations on it, a filthy sensor and a card in it with someone's pics on it.

Number three was a D300, it arrived, again with around 3000 shots on it, but also with a dead AF motor. I don't think JP's refurbishing process consists of anything more than a cursory inspection and a wipe over with a damp cloth.....
 
I have just bought a D3100 and a 55mm-200mm vr lens, both as new.
 
Should be fine, i bought one refurbished before and had no problems. They under the same checks as the good cameras so really it should come out just as good.

Also most come with 90 day warranties so if something is wrong with it from the start you are going to no allowing you to change it.
 
The 20D I bought almost 5 years ago was a refurb, I haven't had any problems with it and it's had a lot of use.

It was Wilkinsons I was looking at Helen, £449 I think it was, which I thought sounded reasonable especially with a guarantee which you wouldn't get with a used one from a private sale
 
I bought a D80 refurb, it was rubbish, WB was all over the place, went back within a week!!! never don it since . . .

:thumbsup: I'll check that out. Right now I'm concentrating on getting one ok zoom lens and the 35mm 1.8 but the latter is a devil to get hold of. If prices go up anymore I'm buying the better more expensive price I've seen at £300 because right now I'm not keen on dropping £200 on it as it's going to bomb when they start production back up.
