Refurbished cameras- anybody got one?

I've found a refurbished Canon 40D on ebay being sold by the Canon outlet. It's got a 1 year manufacturers warranty with it, and the reasons for it being listed as refurbished are:

It was used as demo product (at trade fairs etc.),
The outside carton box was slightly damaged during transportation (and then replaced by a neutral brown packaging), or
It was sold and the box was opened. Then the item got returned to Canon.

Anybody ever bought a refurbished camera before? I'm guessing as it's got the warrenty with it it's all legit, and it seems a very good price. Plus it may just be the answer I need- I cannot find a 2nd hand 40D for less than £500!!

Any advice greatly appreciated and cookies to all who reply :clap:
 
I have purchased two refurbed Canons from their ebay shop - a G5 and a 400D, both came with one year warranty, full unopened software, all accessories and both have performed perfectly since I got them, the G5 was bought quite a few years ago now.
 
They tend to go up in price very quickly towards the end.

I can't see any problem with it, at the end of the day a box is a box. It'll only get chucked away or sat in a cupboard somewhere.

The only problem you'll get is the re-sale value might be lower when you come to sell it IF you are honest in your advert and mention you bought it as a refurb.
 
I purchased an refurbished Nikon D300 from Jessops and saved a packet on the new price. It came with one years warranty and all the bits and pieces - I've had no problems.
 
I bought a refurbished 400D from the canon outlet for my son. 1 year warranty. Great value.

So did I - it was dead :shrug:

I know someone who bought a camera from the Canon Outlet and it was DOA too, just your luck, I guess. The CO stuff never really ends up as much of a bargain though, as people seem to be prepared to pay daft money for it.
 
As mentioned above I can't see many downsides although some of them go for silly money towards the end of the auction.. I was watching 3 the other day just out of interest and 2 went for a little under £500 and another went for £650 and according to the advert they were identical and a new one can be had for around £560.... just be careful you don't end up paying too much for one and you should be ok... they are official canon refurbs as well
 
I followed quite a few 40D's on the outlet shop before buying brand new from Cardiff Camera Centre for £10 more than the refurbished ones were going for on ebay.

Worth checking with a few Jessops stores, my local one had a 40D which iirc was around £450 back when the clearance sale was on. It was one that had been returned under the 30-day no quibble policy and came with a years guarantee.

why not you can't loose if you stick to a budget, you probably won't win but you never know...

I would personally look into getting that extra 100 quid or so from somewhere and just buying one new or looking in the for sale bit here if one comes up... I don't mind refurbs but most seem too expensive on that site.

Are you selling your old camera? have you already added that to your budget?
 
No I'm keeping my 350D as a spare body, so I am basically using my student loan to fund the new camera. I really can't afford to buy new, my budget was £400 but I've pushed it up to £450, so that really is the most I can afford at the moment :(

I'd look for one being sold privately but my parents categorically will not let me, so it has to come from a business seller which is a bummer :(

I can understand where your parents are coming from but I think you can rule out a 40D for £450 from a shop ... you will only get one for that second hand... lets face it they are worth it.

Is there is reason you need to replace the 350 with a 40D? would looking at new lens's not be another option... not saying you shouldn't look at the 40D but its always worth checking if this is gadget lust or if you really NEED a new camera?

P.S. I would buy one at the drop of a hat if the wife would let me :(

I'm replacing the 350D as it's getting old, not as reliable, it goes through batteries like you wouldn't believe, plus I need the extra fps, and really need a 2nd body. I've got a Sigma 70-200 2.8 which is what I mainly use (I do sports photography) and also have a nice Sigma 10-20, so just need a better body now :)

fair enough ... imagine how I feel with my old 300D :(... might be worth having a look and seeing if there are any independent camera shops around your area that might have some second hand ones, online shops are always going to be priced highly as it's a popular camera.

Totally agree, I've seen people bid higher than some of the prices on camera price buster :cuckoo: Defeats the object of buying a refurbished product to save money.
 
Yep, one bad, one good story same type of camera. Got refurbished 1D MKiin from Canon Outlet on eBay, and it didn't work, well not with a lens attached, had to send it back and get a refund. They didn't like bad feedback remarks, so got 5% off next purchase as an out of eBay court settlement. Well once bitten, twice shy, bought another 1D Mkiin off them again a few months later, great camera, can't fault it, happy with purchase. A friend has bought 3 camera's off them with no problems (perhaps my experience was one that got through the net)

Not bought a camera - but bought a referb printer (MP610) for the wife.

No problems with it and got it for a price I was happy with - but wondered, when watching the 'bidding' process on a few of them before I bought, if the process is entirely legit.

I noticed that pretty much everything gets a near identical 'bid' very soon after the item appears..... This is not my experience when watching other stuff on eBay. I do wonder if the 'benefit' of the new hidden bidders system is that multiple 'offers' may be being placed and might be 'shill' bidding the price up?

Anyhow - if you get what you want at a price you are happy with it doesn't matter. If you are not happy - it's easy. Don't buy!
 
I did think about shill bidding, I've come back tonight to see that all 3 cameras I was watching have gone up by about £200 each...

They're all but out of my price range now, it's back to the drawing board for the 40D search :( :(

All gone up, to a similar price, well before the end of the auction? That's similar behaviour to the printers I watched and thought was odd.

Maybe nothing odd about it at all and the prices the things I've been watching sell for are certainly 'fair' (and I was not bothered about the reasonable price I paid) but I do wonder if it is an entirely 'open' process sometimes...
 
I got a refurb 1DMk2N a couple of years ago from the Canon Outlet store and all went pretty well. The camera failed after one days use as the back dial packed up. I contacted them and was offered a refund or told that as it was under warranty i could go down that route. As it was one of the cheaper ones id seen i arranged for a trip to Fixation. Initially the bruddy thing sorted itself while at Fixation and then went wibble up a few weeks later. Luckily this time it was diagnosed and fixed under warranty and has been fine since. The only other 'strange' thing was that i was outbid in the dying seconds and then given a second chance offer for my max bid. As it was i was willing to pay that anyway so no great loss and i got a 580EX flash in the bargain aswell. So in the end if the price is right i would have no problem buying again.
