I had an interesting experience today. I'd sent some photos of a jousting contest to a local newspaper (see Flickr page below), but they went with another photographer in the end. Fair enough - it was my first crack at a newspaper, and I was encouraged by the fact that the well-known local tog they used had taken many almost identical shots to mine. I'm pleased with the quality of mine, and there's no hard feelings.

But - then - on the back of that, I had a request from the mother of one of the perfomers. She said that they had seen the photos of the jousting contest and though they were "some of the best photos they had seen taken of them", which left me completely made up

They have asked very nicely if they can have a couple of images for their portfolios, as they are both looking to join a national register of stunt men. I'm more than happy to oblige - and it has just made me a whole lot more confident with my photography.

That'll no doubt be why they were rejected then! :(

I like to think so, rather than the quality of the images. I had a look at the other tog's pictures and they were good - I couldn't see much to separate us, really. However, I held my ground when the paper originally said that they didn't pay for pictures - it was the Surrey Herald, and they're not a free paper - so I didn't see why they should have anything for free if they wanted my stuff.

The fact that two of the performers wanted some shots for their portfolio gave me some encouragement that they may not have been rejected for technical or artistic reasons.

Yes, if you can get some sales out of it that way then you're on a win win situation! :)

When someone says they want some of your shots! is one of the best motivators you can get  Personally speaking, getting images published, paid or not is a real buzz too! congrats from me...

Yes. I've offered them a couple of images for their portfolios for free (flattery works with me, and they were very entertaining), and said that if they want any other stunt work photographed in the future... ;)

There you go...a step closer to becoming a movie stills photographer - keep hanging around these guys and it'll generate something eventually...
