Relacement Motherboard Woes

I did not get any :D I had any stuff I needed backed up anyway. Installed a new Mobo, different make to the last one. Powered on, splash screen comes up, Windows boots up and then automatically searched for and installed an updated driver for the soundcard, outlook re configured itself automatically and that was it job done in less than 20mins :D
 
Give yourself a wee pat on the back for being a lucky fellow!
 
If you change the mainboard and get no problems your lucky, you usually need a reload of your O/S to stop minor niggles.
 
Same chipset as the old M/B, or running Win XP on it? If neither of those, you're luckier than I've ever been.... :thumbs:
 
wondering if i should take the chance and swap out my main HDD for an SSD, im thinking of creating a iamge of the hard disk and reloading it when i swap the drives over. Knowing me it will all fall over.

i tried that, all of the imaging apps i tried wouldnt let you take an image from a larger drive and put it onto a smaller one. was quicker in the end to reinstall windows, took about 10 mins for 7 to install :D
 
thanks for the heads up, i'll just backup everything again! and reinstall when i get the new HDD

Win7 Ultimate. The strange thing is that although I have got no probs with it, I now want to do a fresh install :lol::lol: Or is it a case of let sleeping dogs lie :shrug:
 
Back in the days of W98 there was a registry line that you could delete prior to your final shutdown before installing a new and different motherboard. It was then a painless reinstall of the new drivers on bootup and you were up and running. When XP came along I never could find the same registry line and a different motherboard would just not boot at all without a new OS install.

Since then I 've always bought a second identical motherboard as a backup, just to save the days of reinstalling the OS and all my progs and tweaks. That registry line must be hidden somewhere in W7, if only we could find it.
 
Well done, isn't it great when things go well with PCs!?

My 5 year old Dell laptop is dying now (getting bluescreens on a fairly regular basis) so I've just had to shell out for a replacement. Refurbed XPS 15 on the way!
 
Had some similar luck when my mobo gave up sometime after I had installed Win 7. Everything I read at the time suggested it wouldn't work but it did!

(Well it worked after a few hours of head scratching when I realised my new mobo couldn't have all its RAM slots occupied)

but thats normal for Dell laptops :lol:

i'vr had 4 Dell laptops in my career and they have all been far less reliable than the systems ive put together myself - and a lot more expensive

If you buy the cheap stuff I'd agree they can be hit and miss but that'd the same for any brand, have a search for the thread I did on the missus Toshiba laptop for example.

The higher end laptops though, we have about 150 odd dell latitude throughout the range from the old d600 to the new E series and they've all been flawless, and they're tough little buggers.
