Remote shutter release

I have been using very happily a wired remote release on my 550D but as it won't fit my new 5D Mk II I am going to have to purchase another. Does anyone have any views as to the advantages or otherwise of infra red over cable?

I understand that IR only works in line of sight, but that doesn't really matter to me as my main use will be for landscapes. All views gratefully accepted.

Will the IR remote have all the timer functionality that the cabled ones usually have?

I was thinking of the Canon RC 6. TBH I'm not bothered about timer functions.

I find them very useful as a landscape photographer (well, more so the exposure time function). Having wireless is far less useful for landscape work than the timer programable options you get with wired in my opinion.
