Is this an option for my Canon 40D? Im off swimming with the fishes in a few months time and would love to take my camera as i've heard its a possible. I have no knowledge about this subject so any information would be a great help.

Well, I don't know about the costs of renting it, but when I looked into buying underwater housing for the D300s and 2 separate lens addons, the total was close to 2 grand.

So I'd be interested in finding out if anybody in the UK rents underwater housing too. :)

I assume you're going diving? unless you're an experienced diver I wouldn't take a DSLR underwater - they're very hefty and cumbersome and you really should be concentrating on your buoyancy.

Also, also noted DLSR housings cost an absolute bomb and underwater you really need a macro lens and you also need flash, typically due to their shape with dslr housings the onboard flashes don't work particularly well. Even if you have the lens this could add an extra £1k or so onto the price (strobe and port).

A much better thing to do (IMHO) is to take down a decent compact, all of which have good macro and the flashes work pretty well too. Compact housings are in the region of £150 so at least ten times cheaper than a DSLR housing. My ultimate would be a Canon S90.

Finally, I'm not aware of anyone who hires out DSLR housings.

Some dive centres rent out underwater cameras and housing. They may let you have housing only but the chances of them having the one for your particular camera would be slim.

Is it snorkelling or diving?

Checkout camerasunderwater, they're rather knowledgeable and have a good stock of what you're looking for.

However, as has been said, it isn't cheap. Also, if this is a dive, and you're not very well at it then it can get too fiddly.

dSLR underwater isn't for the faint hearted, the consequence of the slightest mistake is the total loss of your gear.

If this is a one off event, it may be best to take a Canon G10 / G11 with its' dedicated housing; this option may even be cheaper than renting

For snorkelling, I bought an Olympus Mju 770 SW a few years ago and last year, it decided that it would no longer be waterproof. To replace it, I've now got a Canon D10 which has yet to be tested (by me) in the briny, although we're off in 2 1/2 weeks to somewhere warm enough for me to get in the sea with it! I'll report back on it's underwater IQ etc once I know more. It's only waterproof down to 10m though, so only really good for snorkelling, not diving.

Hopefully going diving. :) Thanks for the info so far and sadly £1000 is out of my price range. I would brave my camera but im not braving my wallet!

Most companies don't rent them out as few divers trust ones that have been used by other people, the chances of trashing your equipment if a seal is faulty etc is way too high.
