Renting a dyesub printer...

Hi guys,

Next year I am hoping to takin on some event photography jobs, proms, school reunions etc. etc.

I have been reading threads covering this type of work and have come to the realisation that I will be need a dyesub printer to make it work. With the cost of these around the £1000 mark it is a massive outlay for a 19 year old just starting a business. I thought about mailing the prints to people at a later date etc. but the general consensus seems to that I will make a lot less money.

So the question is where can I rent a dyesub printer, also is it worth my while or should I take the plunge for a loan to buy one?

I would like to Rent for I only 2/3 days instead of a week to keep costs down.


Does anyone know a place in the southeast of England that I can pick it up from and then drop it back to?

I am booked onto a social photography course with Paul Rogers in Jan, so maybe would be good to ask his opinion?

If buying second hand, Make sure you see it printing out 10 or so images all together and check for any image issues or slowing down of the printer...Also make sure that there are suppliers of media for the model you choose....Register on one of the event photography sites...lots and lots of info there (I have 6 Mitsubishi Dye-Subs)
 
Photomart also hire dye subs by the way.

Unfortunately the p-440 seems not to support windows 7 64bit, so it wouldn't be any use to me :(

I would keep clear of the Olympus, getting hold of media is now difficult, it is also a rather slow machine. You wil be better off looking at roll fed machines by Mitsubishi, DNP, Fuji, HiTi or Kodak.

No Windows 7 64 bit driver for that machine.

You need to be looking at more current machiney.
 
My advice would be to cover all options first. Go to somewhere like Photomart who sell the largest range of dye sub printers in the UK. They will offer advice regarding buying or hiring. Look at the S/H market too many bargains may be out there after xmas but you will still need to source the media so Photomart may be able to help there and again with mounts and bags etc.

You have made a wise choice with enrolling with Paul as he is a well respected event pro with his own style. However you will still need to look at other workshops as everyone offers something different. Please only look for the more successful ones as they are still out there practicing what they teach.
 
Mark above can't say it, but I can: he works for photomart, who are the best, give him a call and I'm sure that he'll happily talk you through some options :)

Good luck. I got started with a (s)hiti 730ps which was cheap, slow and had expensive media - but it did get me into it.
