Repair or buy another?

Yes
I have a Canon 28-70 2.8L which was a nice lens until I gave it over for repair. The problem with it wasn't so much zoom creep, it was zoom slide. Over the years it had got so well used that if I even slightly tilted the camera forward then the zoom would shift.

When the lens came back from repair it is no better than before and now it won't even focus. At this stage I will state that ther "repair" was done by a one men band, not one of the big repair centers. I cannot name the repairer for legal reasons, it's going to court.

So, do I send the lens for repair to one of the repair centers and hope that the bill isn't too bad or shall I just bite the bullet and buy a nice new 24-70 and consign the 28-70 to the back of the cupboard?

That's a bad experience. If you take it to Canon, they will quote you for the repair. At least you will know what is still wrong with it and how much the repair should have cost.

That's what I would do anyway. It should be an economic repair I would have thought, but I don't have any experience.

Hope it all works out.

Graham

I'd give one of the official repair centre's ago before you shell out on a new one. Although don't expect a repair to be a cheap option.

If the lens comes back in the same condition from the repair centre, at least you will know that the independent repair couldn't do any more.

I used http://www.fixationuk.com and they were really good (Canon Authorised). If you are around london way you can take it in or mail it to them. They say service from £35 for a lens but you can call them for a rough estimate.

Cheers for that Slats, I've dropped it into them today on the strength of your recommendation.

So if it all goes wrong..... :)

The 28-70 is dead.

There is a part inside that has been damaged that Canon no longer supply so it looks like I may have a very nice pencil pot once the glass has been removed from it.

You could turn it into a mug!

Any idea what part is gone?

Have a look here for your lens,
http://www.micro-tools.net/pdf/Canon/

find the part number and google/ebay it or give me a shout if you fancy selling

I have a 300/4 L im fixing at the min, (wasnt broke to begin with but thats a different story lol) Canon no longer support this lens but i was able to find the parts required to fix it (Hopefully!!) on Ebay :D

Thanks for your kind words chaps ... at the moment I cannot afford to replace the lens, even at that splendid second hand price.

I received another call today from Fixation. The Sigma 17-35 that I took into them for the stick aperture blades to be sorted out is also unrepairable due to Sigma no longer providing parts for it. So thats a grand and a half worth of lenses written off in a week.

Santa better get his finger out this year!
