Replace my Nikon 80-400mm or

Having recently killed my 80-400mm (insurance company is playing ball so no problem there

), i am wondering if instead of replacing it should i go for the Nikon af-s 300mm f4 ed, and possibly look out for a converter. I do have a Sigma 1.4 TC, but have not looked into the disadvantages of using that, if indeed it is possible. I realize i will lose VR which is also a bit of a concern, really dont know which way to go. Any views you guys may have could possibly help me

Should also add my main interest is wildlife, birds either static or flying

VR/IS is a crutch you don't need, give up the dependency.

Brian I owned the 80-400VR, then purchased the 300f4 AF-S and 1.4TC, after a few days I sold the 80-400VR.

The 300 f4 AF-S plus 1.4TC is sharp wide open, focuses quicker and resolves fine detail better.

You loose VR however this was not an issue for me as I use a tripod, or monopod anyway.
