Looking to replace subject lens as fed up with slow focusing/failing to focus. Have considered new 24-120 F4G ED VR but its a bit over budget. Willing to consider Sigma/Tamron 24-70 or Nikon 24-85 f3.5-4.5G or indeed anything similar as have from 70- onwards covered with Tamron 70-300. Any suggestions/recommendations? Budget about £500.TIA

A few years ago, I upgraded my 24-120 to a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 which was great but I've recently upgraded that to the 24-120 f/4 VR Nikkor which is better (sharper, more reach and VR) but as you say, not cheap. I was very lucky to get the Sigma in a Jessops sale and I got almost as much for it when I traded it in as I had paid a few years earlier.

Quite a few are happy with the new Nikkor 24-85 and it's rather cheap(ish) atm... £170 on eBay, I just see...

But depending on what camera you have, I would save a little longer and get the lens of your dream. It could save you a few bucks further down the road...

Happy hunting! :D
