Hello. Hopefully I should have a new job soon offering more hours therefore I can afford a new lens :D

Im currently using a 400D body. I have 10-20mm sigma, 18-55mm Kit lens and a 55-250mm zoom lens. I hope to get a longer zoom lens at a later date, probably a 150-500mm sigma.

For now I wish to upgrade my 18-55mm kit lens. I need something which will range from 20s up to 100mm possibly so I can cover most ranges.

Can anyone recommend a lens worth getting? I have seen a 28mm-135mm EF lens but its looking a little out dated now so im not sure if its the one to get/worth it? As a replacement lens for the kit lens ide like to keep it under £250 and I will buy second hand.

Thanks

I would recommend a Tamron 17-50 2.8. It should come in around £200-£230 second hand, and they're a fantastic lens for the price. The older non VC model is meant to be slightly sharper than the newer model. Apart from a prime, I doubt you'll get a better lens in that price range.

Oki, thank you. Theres one for £209 and one for £300? One is "Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II (IF), Canon EF Fit" and the other is "Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC, Canon EF Fit".

VC is tamrons version of IS, So ones with and ones without. Tamron's VC is suppose to be brilliant, seen lots of reviews with people raving about the Tamron VC.

The new 18-135 IS STM could suit you if you want a good range. It's been updated and from some of the reviews I've seen the IQ has definitely improved. Also there's the 15-85 IS which is a fantastic lens and a reasonable reach too. Neither of the 2 lenses are cheap though, but you might be lucky in finding a decent second hand one.

The only other lens in the range you're after is the 18-135 IS which can be got for around £240 new and from around £150 second hand. Mine's definitely better than the 18-55 Kit lens I had and though the wife uses it most on her 650D I have used it a couple of times on my 7D and 60D I had previously and got some pretty good results from it.

Not a plug, but i'm selling a Tamron 17-50 VC on here for my daughter and yes the VC is excellent and if hers is anything to go by a very sharp lens, constant f/2.8 too

I have the Canon 17-55mm and there isn't much between them, excellent performance especially when you consider the Canon cost over twice as much
