Went for the D700 and Nikkor 24-70 2.8 and couldn't be happier. Also bought it from a forum member. Thanks for all the advice it's very much appreciated.

Yep, mine is sat in the corner of the room!
A lot of people were doing this dance with the 5D, shall I wait for the mk2 etc, I really wanted the mk2 to be a D700 with a canon badge, but no, So I jumped across
Currently got the same issues myself. Really want to jump across to a D700 but it feels like I've got so much invested in Canon. The grip deal is somewhat forcing the issue, as are the looming VAT increases!

Me too. The 5D was (and is) truly a classic but I needed good AF and high ISO in one body. I contacted Nikon as it was a fairly hefty swap over and they confirmed in Feb this year that there was no planned replacement for the D700 this year. So I bought two.
My other concern was that if Nikon did the same thing with the D700 as they did with the D3-D3s-D3x then the new D700 could have two variants, both considerably more expensive! So I decided that the D700 was really the camera I wanted and sold all my Canon kit to buy 2 D700's and 5 lenses with 2 SB900's and I absolutely adore them!
