Hi,

What would be a good replacement for the 18-55 kit lens?

I like mine, but I feel like it lacks length at times.

I have a 55-250, but I don't want to be swapping to that all of the time.

Is the 17-85 a good choice?

Thanks.

Budget and what you like to photograph would be helpful:thumbs:

I've just bought the 18-70 Nikon lens. Got it 2nd hand on ebay for £100.00.

Would this be your choice then Luke?

I picked up the 17-85mm a few weeks back on this forum for £150 second hand, and so far i have been very pleased with it. The build quality is SO much better than the kit lens and the image quality is also alot better:thumbs:

Absolutely, I own one and use it on my 7D. With the sheer amount of pixels the 7D has, it tends to highlight poor quality lenses pretty well, and Ive been nothing but pleased with this lens. Great IQ, a proper focusing ring, focusing window, metal build, heavy and stury. Great lens for the price, cant beat it.

the 17-85 will be great for you and you can then retire the kit lens with a smile on your face.

I've got the 18-135 IS which is a great lens if you don't want to keep changing them. Very good IS and apart from a little barrel distortion at 18mm (which you'll get with any super-zoom) the IQ is spot on.

I was going to get the cheaper 28-135 IS but I found 28mm wasnt wide enough for a walkabout.
