Replacement for Canon 7D

I currently use a Canon 7D and a Canon 7D Mk2. I mainly shoot wildlife, lighthouses and whisky distilleries.

The 7D is over 5 years old and I've recently been having some battery recognition problems with it. I was thinking about replacing it anyway but now definitely intend to.

I've been considering another 7D Mk2 or possibly going full frame with a 5D Mk2 or Mk3. The problem is that I don't want the additional expense of lens changes and as my 100-400L Mk2 is almost permanently attached to the 7D Mk2 then if I went full frame as well my remaining lenses (efs 10-22 and efs 15-85) would not be compatible with a full frame body.

However I was thinking last night, what about a 5DS? I could use it with my 100-400 and either crop the large files or use it in its 1.6x mode, which would effectively be the same as on the 7D Mk2, and then use my other lenses on the 7D Mk2.

Anyone got any thoughts on this possible solution?

If I was in your position I would keep the 7D2 on the 100-400mm, get a 5D Mark II or 5D Mark III if budget allows to go along side it as your FF camera, gives you a better range than having two of the same camera specially when you consider wide angles, ISO etc. Then I would sell the 10-22mm and 15-85mm and get the Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM or even the Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM which only go for about £300 on the forum which are superb lens or the 24-105mm f/4L USM which isn't much more if you want more of zoom and less of the wide angle then you got two top quality bodies and lenses, if you go for the 5Ds only option you loose out on the 7D2's speed both in FPS & AF. Hope the helps :)

Thanks for the reply Joe. One of the problems I have with replacing the 7D with a 5D is that I don't like Canons 24-105L (I've had two) and it's the only real alternative to the EF-S 15-85, which I really like.

Not sure if I'm reading your last line properly but I'm not planning to "go for the 5DS only option". I would be using 100-400L on the 5DS and 10-22/15-85 on the 7D2.
