Replacement for Canon MP610

My wife has an MP610 about 11 years old which has several significant issues now so needs replacing. She still needs a printer which can also scan/copy and print doubled sided automatically. It needs to print text well but also produce reasonable family photos. It does not need to be a specialist photographic printer as I have that. Having worked through Canon's "select your printer", the recommended printer has poor text printing performance. Looking though Which? if I select all of her criteria, no printer is selected! It seems that the MP610 will be a hard act to follow but could an anyone recommend a replacement?

I have a Canon MG5250 A4 all-in-one printer, and have been very happy with it, so would not hesitate to buy another Canon. Prints photos very well with suitable paper. Canon don't sell either the MP or MG ranges now, though. I did investigate the TS range for my daughter; they divide into cheaper ones with two cartridges (one black, one colour. not recommended), and more expensive ones with 5 cartridges (the same cartridges that I use in my printer). She hasn't bought one yet, so I can't report actual usage, but the Canon PIXMA TS6250 is a 5-ink one, £80 in John Lewis, and nothing about its spec looks dodgy. Might be worth a try if you have a JL near you; they're good about returns if you have a problem (compared with Currys, certainly).

Thanks for the information. The TS6250 is the one that Canon recommend when you fill-in details of our requirements. The only thing holding us back is that Which? claim printed black text is poor; this aspect is more important for my wife than photos as she could always print on my Epson P600. She is seriously considering a HP 6950 at a similar price now. I think we do need to see the printers and output so may well visit our John Lewis.

If you have the space why not get a budget level monochrome laser printer for all text based docs you need to print? I/we have had the HP Laserjet P1102W for years has had something like total of >42,000 pages through it and yes it is now starting to show signs of wear that the replacements toner carts don't remedy e.g. when I want to print manual two sided there can be some skewing of the sheet......so needs a little help to keep it aligned. (NB I think this is due to some wear in the feed roller & path)

If we had the room I would add such an inkjet that you are seeking but sadly not enough space for two printers :(

Another vote for mono laser printer if text printing is important.

We do have a "computer Room" with 3 PC's and 3 printers. I have a Brother Mono LaserJet which is used for large quantities and photocopying so it is a good option. Given I have the Epson P600 for photography, you might wonder why we need another printer. However, my wife always had her own general office ink jet and wished to continue. I would not want either of us to use the P600 for general office use as the ink is so expensive. I also sometimes have need for colour ink jet office printing so use her printer. So it is not necessary logical us having 3 printers but we do have the space.

Many thanks for advice so far. Dave

Made a decision in the end and bought a Canon TS6250. The Black text printing seems fine despite the criticism from Which?. Overall, she did not think that any printers at a reasonable price matched the previous MP610 but seems happy enough with the TS6250 so far.

I'd be interested to know what you feel about an A4 photo print with the TS6250. Never going to compare with your P600, of course.

My wife has not got any photos to print right now but, if I find the time, I might print the same file on each though would be very surprised if the P600 is not clearly better.

Yes, you'd hope so! However, it would be interesting to see how good a print you can get on the Canon, and only then try it on the P600 (if you see what I'm getting at?)...

hi guys off on a tangent here but I was thinking of starting to print off some shots, and reading this I had not realised the p600 printers were suitable for the job, I was given a mp610 a while ago by my first born due to the fact that she had refilled it with cheap inks and messed it up. so if it is good for the job how would I go about cleaning the printer heads and what ink is best for the job and would the ink be expensive? also while I am asking suggestions on suitable paper please

It is an old discontinued consumer grade printer!

If you have the time for some DIY tinkering to get it working and can in that process be happy with buying inks, be they cheaper 3rd party or OEM, at risk of it not being restored to a fully working condition.....then fine. But just maybe, more economical to buy a new current model???

PS AFAIK P600 is a high end Epson model the prefix MP6xx is the Canon consumer grade ones ;)

Yes, just to confirm that the two printers I mentioned are very different. The Canon MP610 and the Canon TS6250 which has replaced it are three in one general office type printers. Both are capable of printing photographs but are not specialised photographic printers. The Epson P600 is a high end specialist photographic printer. The P600 costs a lot more and is expensive to run. If you are just into printing photos, I would recommend initially using a commercial printer (it is cheaper) until and unless you are convinced that home printing is worth it. I print myself because I have particular requirements which it is sometimes difficult to achieve using commercial prints.

I have now printed the same image on both the Epson P600 and Canon TS6250. This was a B&W image and as the P600 has Multiple blacks, the prints from the P600 were much better. It is not that the TS6250 prints were bad but the P600 prints were sharper with much more tonal detail. A number of subtle changes in tone were not really visible with the Canon. It was worth doing the test so I can confirm that it is worth the extra cost. At club competitions, I can usually see clearly which B&W prints are from a high quality Multi-black printer and they almost always fair better with the judges. I am sure my wife will be happy with the TS6250 though as she cannot even see the difference between HD and standard TV.

I'm really grateful for this, David (@Dave Canon ). I don't have the space for a big printer, but I'm very much aware of the limitations when printing on my MG5250, particularly black and white. Unpleasant colour shifts in black and white is another occasional problem, although I find that this happens less with some papers, and is also lessened by a decent period to outgas.

Any chance you could show us an example area from the two prints? Although maybe it wouldn't show up well on here...

It would be difficult. The same files was sent to each printer so the only way I could do that is to scan the prints. The P600 print is now mounted and off to a competition. I suspect the differences will be less obvious for colour and if the colours are slightly less accurate who would know anyway unless it is a wedding or fashion photography and I do neither. I will at some time print the same image in colour on each printer and report back.
