Replacement for my crappy redsnapper tripod...

Over the last few months (it's less than a year old) my redsnapper tripod has steadily fallen apart. Bits have fallen out of the legs (day 1 of ownership), the tilt adjust has always needed an allen key to work, the bolts which bolt directly into plastic have stripped out etc etc. Basically it's a prime example of buy cheap buy twice.

So, can anyone suggest a tripod which packs down fairly small for strapping to a rucsac but is fairly sturdy for landscape shots? Not massively bothered about weight, I think of it as training!

Are those trigger things as simple to use as they look - squeeze, move horizontally/vertically, let go?

Just buy a Gitzo and as a bonus they can also be light:)

Or, if you don't like the price, even though you only need buy 1 for life, look at Giottos. I like them as well- the 8360 is good.
Then get yourself a nice 3 way head and don't bother with gimmicky pistol grip rubbish or ball heads for landscapes. If you like ball heads fair enough but I think a 3way is easier for landscapes and prefer ball heads for portraits. Wouldn't waste your money on a pistol grip but I'm sure someone will have bought one and thinks they're awesome:lol:
 
I found the build of the redsnappers to be pretty good too!

Like the good Dr said, the Gitzo seems to be the best choice if you find yourself going through tripods that fast. This one should keep you going for a few years at least, and its light enough for lugging around and packs up pretty small.

I've got SLIK PRO 700DX legs (prefer to Manfrotto 055) with a Manfrotto 498 RC2 Ball Head.

Good solid combination and great if your tall.

Surprised to hear about your Redsnapper though.
 
Get a Benbo.

They're Made in England from real metal and the more you bash them the more manly they look. :)

Mine's stripped the thread in the handle, it's now tightened by a spanner hanging from a length of para-cord :)
However, it is around 20yrs old!
I'm very fond of it, even though it weighs a ton and collapsing it is like bag-pipe wrestling.

I have the centre column bracket so I don't get so much of the drunken Octopus thing. :love:

They are tripods for outdoor use by MEN.

LOL I have a big old monster too. You can replace the bent bolt.
 
Cool, lots to look at there. I'll be checking them out in the flesh this time.

I considered contacting them but tbh, I've no proof of purchase and it's all the kind of damage which they'll prob try and pass off as cackhandedness on my part.

Well as long as it isn't down to cackhandedness on your part I wouldn't worry, Redsnapper are one of the best outfits around.
 
defo a Manfrotto alloy tripod and a Giottos 5001 3-way head for landscapes

weighs a bit though .......:D

I tend to agree from my admittedly limited experience with them. Send and email at least (It might be worth giving them another try). What version did you have? they seem to have updated their line quite recently.
 
I've sent them an email so hope to hear something soon. Not sure on the exact model, doesn't appear on it anywhere.

I'll let you know what they say.
