Following on from this thread (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=223886) my insurance company has offered to replace my Acer Aspire 5735 with the Acer Aspire 5740 (details found here http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5740_Core_i3_Laptop_LX.PM902.089/version.asp).

The old laptop had a 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 processor with 3gb of DDR2 RAM running Vista. The new laptop has a 2.13Ghz Intel Core i3 processor with 2gb of DDR3 RAM running Windows 7. Is the replacement going to be as fast as the old one? I used it for lightroom/photoshop and although it wasn't lightning quick it wasn't bad for what I used it for.

You might want a little bit more memory...But I bought this lappy the other day, and the i3's are faster pound for pound than c2d's.

DDR3 is faster than DDR2.
Bus speed of 1066Mhz, over 800Mhz.
And Windows 7 is faster than Vista.

I'd say go for it :)

Cheers for the advice Marcel. Do you think there would be a noticeable drop in performance having less RAM, even though it is faster? Is it as simple as 2x1066=2132Mhz only being slightly less than 3x800=2400Mhz, so performance wouldn't be too affected?
