i'm looking to replace my canon 18-55 kit lens with a lens with better quality glass and possibly with a bit more reach.now i've narrowed it down to.Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens,Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 SP AF Di Lens and the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM.or as i'm looking for better quality glass just go with the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II VC Lens.this one being about as much as i can justifying spending at the moment.
i'd be grateful for any thought on these lens

OK if I get it right 18-55mm kit lens to be replaced

Choice of

Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 SP AF Di Lens
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II VC Lens

so top budget would be about £500/530 with the 17-50 f2.8 VC (IS).
What about the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II LD at £330, do you really need image stabilization.

Do you want wide angle capabilities for landscapes, the 28-75mm won't be any good for that, it frame like a 44.8-120mm lens on a cropped sensor camera.

Wouldn't recommend the canon 17-85mm, not a great lens and only a tad better than the kit, I would go for the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II LD at £330, great lens at half the price of the canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS EFS lens.

If you need to/want to shoot indoors without flash, then you want a constant f2.8 lens.

Ones with similar range to the kit lens are the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 (I have one and it is great,) Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (also highly regarded) and Tokina 16-50mm f2.8 (don't know much about this lens but have heard it's very good.)

If you want to sacrifice a bit of wideness for a longer reach, there's the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

well i use the sigma 10-20 for landscapes.and i use the kit lens for car shows, inside old buildings and family stuff.in regards to image stabilization the kit len is the 18-55 IS lens.i found the IS helpful at family party's. kids running around etc

Well Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 is supposed to be the best 3rd party standard zoom, although the most expensive. The build and sharpness of Tokina lenses is really impressive, even compared with some Ls. Miracles happen, and you could bag Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS on ebay for under £500.
