I've seem that "fact" bandied around the net for years, but when lens quality is really down to a personal opinion of the person testing it's hard to know the real truth, as with a lot on the net, the whole VC vs non VC debate could have been started by one person who posted and posted to every photographic forum and it just became self propagating.
In fact, of real owners (or at least people on the net who claim to own the lens), there seem to be almost none who are unhappy with the quality. I've never owned the VC version so won't comment on it, but over the years have probably had 5 non VC Tamrons (at least 5 I can remember) and have been happy with every single one, so the "lens lottery" probably isn't as prevalent as some make out.
Could be. The internet is a great source of rumours, personal 'experiences' bandied about as major issues, and disinformation, as well as an incredible source of good information for all of us who grew up before it came along.
I've never owned a Tamron or a Sigma, but I did have a Vivitar Series 1 zoom back in the 70s. It was quite a good lens for the price. I do have a love affair with the old metal bodied, completely mechanical, Nikkors and use mine on a 30D sometimes. The results are still very good indeed, and they feel solid and smooth.

I use a 500D with a 24-70 f/2.8 no problem but I like to get in close so the longer lenght suits my shooting style. I do have the 10-22mm for wider work. I guess that option is out due to the budget anyway. I would certainly consider the 17-55mm f/2.8 from canon I really liked it whn I got to have a play.
I upgraded my 18-55 to the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 on my 450D about 18 months ago. I LOVE it! I got it second hand in mint condition on eBay with the hood for just over £600 I think. I'd like a bit more reach, but the constant f/2.8 and IS are the big ones for me as I do a fair amount of low light work.
