Replacing a 10-22 with a 17-40

Within my collection of lenses I have a 10-22 which to be honest doesn't get as much usage as I initially thought. It's been great whilst I've been travelling however since getting a 28mm 1.8 I find this on the camera (550D) more.
So I was thinking of going for a 17-40. I've noticed I could go for a 17-55 but this is price wise out of my reach.
Anyone here been in a similar situation?

The 10-22 is a ultra wide angle. You can't really compare it to a 17-40 or 17-55. Have you not got the 18-55 kit lens? If you like the 17-55 but can't afford it, have a look look at tamron's 17-50 f2.8
