REPLACING LENS

Hi All,

I currently own a Canon 24-105mm f/4l lens, and use this as my main and everyday lens. I have now started contemplating in replacing it with another, the main three contenders are as follow.

1. Used - Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L Mark I
2. Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 IF EX DG HSM
3. Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 Di VC USD SP Lens

The question that is bugging me is, Will any of the above lenses be true upgrade from my current lens or more of a side step?

My main style of photography is people.

If anyone can advise or suggest any alternatives that will be great.

I would say they are only an upgrade if you need the extra stop of light.

The 24-105 is a cracking lens with IS and a decent range to it. What do you feel it isn't doing for you?

I had the Sigma in Canon fitting and I wasn't exactly blown away by it. Neither a bad lens or stunning.

Looking at your camera the only one I would consider as a replacement is the Canon 24-70 f2.8 Mk2 and then only if I needed f2.8

I would love the Mark II, unfortunately out of price range.

I will go as far as saying no purely on the basis you say you use it as a general lens.
We really need to know what your shooting preference is to determine whether gaining a stop of light/shallower DOF is worth more than losing focal range.

Sorry I thought I had stated that in the thread, mainly do people photography..portraits, kids, etc.

But most people would consider the 24-105 to be a very competent lens. So to repeat the question: why do you feel the need for an upgrade? What isn't the 24-105 doing for you, that you think a different lens might do?

Why not keep the 24-105 f4 as a general walkabout lens and add a 50mm f1.4 or 135mm f2 for your low light portrait shots.
