Beginner Rescued from the bathroom

One of my early attempts with my new Sigma 105. Flash was the camera's inbuilt with a cut-down bottle diffuser -inspired by this post from the first page of the macro rig thread

Would have liked a more natural setting but my finger was the best I could manage in this instance!

Any pointers/crit gratefully received (I already know the BG is far from ideal!).

Still very unused to the lens and also to flash photography.

I'd say that is pretty good too, especially one-handed and at this early stage in your experience with the lens and flash. Well done.

That`s a nice shot and all looks good to me.
Concerning the BG, you could have taken a small branch or twig/s and placed the spider on there or if you have a blackened piece of glass for reflections that would also suffice.
Lighting looks good also.
