Reversal ring problems

I have just got a reversal ring for my Nikon d3100 I have put it on and attached it to my camera but the camera isn't picking up the lens and keeps saying no lens attached, any ideas or help.

Surely if the lens is reversed the contacts are pointing away from the camera, so how would it know the lens is there?

Is this a ring to reverse a lens for macro purposes, etc?
