Thinking about getting one for close up's, is it the 52mm I'll need for my nifty fifty? and are they any good?

Did some more playing with it last night and got some reasonable results. The lens I used reversed was set at 28mm if it helps giving just over 2x, more mm = less magnification.

Working distance seems to be about 3-5cm from the end of the lens but hard to tell with out someone else to measure.

No idea, don't have one but if you find the lens on somewhere like warehouse express they usually list the filter size.

FWIW I can recommend the seller I linked in the 1st post. Arrived in about 1.5weeks which isn't bad for stuff from china and seems to be reasonably good quality.

It's the same as the filter size, and screws into the filter thread. As Andy said, 52mm for a Canon 50mm f1.8.
 
Yeah its 52mm and i have one here that i have no intention of using.

No, not at all, but my experience with this is limited to manual SLRs and their lenses. You will obviously lose AF - not much use in macro anyway - and AE, but the biggest problem is that many (most?) modern lenses don't have aperture rings. You won't be able to control the aperture with the camera when the lens is mounted in reverse, so you can't stop it down before you take the shot. I'm sure someone will give you more advice about this.
 
The 50mm f/1.8 is a not a great lens to reverse because it doesn't have an aperture ring.
This means it's always set wide open apart from while taking an exposure or holding the DoF preview button. So that'll be useless for macro (f/1.8 is unworkable for macro).
There is a way of getting around this, by dismounting the lens from the camera while holding the DoF preview button down at the aperture you want (between f/8 and f/22). The lens will then be locked at that aperture until you mount it again.

Personally I would recommend buying a cheap old 50mm off ebay instead. All older lenses will have aperture rings, so the aperture can be set at any time. The mount of the lens doesn't matter since it's being put on backwards. Plus older lenses tend to be mostly metal constructions, so it'll be a lot less flimsy on the reverse ring than the all plastic canon 50 f/1.8

The only other option it to do a DIY reverse mount and carry all the contacts round so you maintain auto aperture control, but that's only to be attempted by people very handy with electronics and tools (and renders the lens useless for mounting normally).
(this video is an interesting watch, someone turns there 18-55mm IS with broken AF into a reverse lens with all contacts, might be interesting :) )
