Friday afternoon thinking session (rather than working)

So what’s the score with getting a 5Dmk II? Do you think them old hat, will I suffer, should I save up, and do you still love yours?

I’ve been having a think about my existing line up and am considering alternatives; I like the 7D autofocus and speed but really like the full frame image (with nice glass). My shooting is typically portrait and landscape; better useable ISO would be nice; very occasionally I do a little wildlife. I also wouldn’t mind pushing out and doing a few event type things, the odd reception, maybe a studio portrait shoot, that sort of thing, keep it fun and interesting.


So hypothetically thinking, where would you go, what would you do?

My current line up

Canon 7D
Canon 50mm F1.8
Canon 100mm F2.8
Canon 17-55mm F2.8
Canon 70-200mm F4
Fuji X100

One school of thought is to keep the 7D and 17-55mm. Buy a 5dMk II, and look toward getting a few primes, not the 1.2 ultra expensive ones though.

Then you have the 5DMk III, new technology, good auto focus, full frame.

Whilst I don’t have a set budget, I don’t have oodles of cash.
 
This will probably start a debate which I'm not going to rise to but If you keep the 7d and get a 5dmk2 then there's nothing extra a mk3 can give you (apart from both cameras in 1 body)
 
I would rather keep it friendly.

I suppose its one body versus two, but both are a bit older technology wise, vs the new kid on the block.

Ideally, it would be nice to have a 5dmk3, a handful of fast primes, a decent walk around zoomer and maybe a longer zoom, but then again Im sure most people would like that sort of set up.

I have upgraded from the mk2 to the mk3 and the only difference I see is the AF
For the money I spent on the mk3 I really think I should have got 2 mk2s instead
Of course that would be what's suits me and my photography and not everyone would agree
 
Thanks, interesting idea, although that puts me back to thinking of a 5dmk2 and keeping the 7D, great pictures on one and fast af on the other.

Its all just thoughts at the minute, nothing more.

No reason why it can't be great images on both
 
I recently did a shoot at a skate/bmx park

I was using a 5d mk2 and a 1d mk2
I got more keepers with the 5d mk2

May be down to user error with the 1d on my part, but the 5dmk2 I think isn't as bad as people make out
 
I had a 5D2 and 7D pairing and was really happy with it. I got some great photos from both of them, and then Canon went and released the 5D3. I weighed up my options and sold the pair and got the 5D3 and IMHO the 5D3 is better than the best of the 5D2 and 7D pair together. The AF is awesome, the high ISO ability is fantastic and the fps isn't to far behind the 7D.

The only things I did miss was the reach of the crop and the convenience of a second body so I eventually added a 60D (which I've recently swapped for a 7D again) and now I'm totally happy with my setup. I added a 35 f2, a 50 f1.4 and an 85 f1.8 primes to my 100 f2.8 L macro and with the crop factor I can shoot from 35mm to a 160mm equivalent between the 2 bodies, but the 5D3 usually gets priority for the primes.

Sounds like you have a great set up there. whilst i dont mind spending money, i want to make sure its spent wisely. I also thought about the same sort of prime set up.
