So after looking on a few websites I came across a few cheaper DSLR's for starting off with and have found even cheaper ones on ebay - after all I don't want to spend a lot of money in the beginning if it turns out I am truly awful at taking pictures or anything :)

The few I've seen are the:
SONY Alpha DSLR-A230
NIKON D3000
CANON EOS 1000D
CANON 350D

I was wondering if anyone could give me any reviews on any of these cameras? thanks

Always found This site to be useful for reviews. Being a Canon man I am biased :) but you need to decide based on what you want to do with the camera and what feels good. I would add that buying from eBay can be dodgy, you dont know the history or anything about the camera or if it all works. When you are able, there are some good buys on this forums for sale section, and as a general statement what you see advertised is exactly what you get, the members here are trustworthy. Now I have left myself open for comments

Hi Amy, best deal at the moment is probably the superb canon 450d on ebay from digigood, supplied from UK so no customs duty many of my clients have used them,

check the reviews at www.dpreview.com.

A good comment, I was refering to second hand on eBay when I made that comment, Digigood do have a good reputation and the 450D is a good choice but that my personal opinion too.

Reviews are fine but by their nature are a biased outlook from the reviewer. his dislikes may be just the reason you want the camera.

All the makes/models listed take good photographs. It is you that makes them great.

Go and see if you can handle a variety and see which feels most comfortable in your hands with button/contol/menu layout you find most intuitive.

That's the one you buy.

Welcome to TP :)

The Canon 350D is a bit old now but if budget is tight it's a good used buy for around £200. It's an earlier version of the 1000D in some ways but they're all very similar variations on the same popular 'entry-level DSLR' theme.

Basically you get what you pay for and pound for pound there's really nothing to choose between most cameras in the same price bracket. Not in terms of objective performance, it depends more on any particular features (eg video, fold-out screen etc) you might want.

You don't mention budget but if you can stretch to £500 (Jessops) for a Canon 450D with 18-55 IS kit lens, as mentioned above, that's a lot of camera for the money http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod636.html The for sale forum here is excellent :)

We bought 2 450ds with 18-55 IS lens from Digigood on ebay, suplied from UK at £367 each supposedly reconditioned but certainly appeared absolutely brand new.

Read details at end of auction before buying though.

Buy a second-hand D70/D70s with a kit lens on eBay. Excellent camera to learn with... for a range of reasons including

- Flash sync speed
- No issues with non-motorised lenses
- No gimicks, just access to all the settings you need to learn the principles

For a long while it will be you with the limitations, not the camera
