Hi,

Im buying a Canon 50d today and have been in turmoil about which lenses to buy as i didnt want to buy all crop lenses and then when i move to full frame next year then have to sell them all.

So... ive come up with this idea. Please let me know if im talking b******s!

Buy the canon 24-105mm L lens now to use as a portrait lens. I hardly ever use wide anyway and as its a fixed F4 it should be good in the studio and it covers the main range for studio.

If i do ever need wide i can buy the canon 17-40mm L lens and use that when i need.

Then when i come to sell the 50d next year when i go to full frame i could sell it with the canon 17-40mm , keep my 24-105 which will be my wide to middle telephoto then (no crop) and then buy the canon 70-200 f2.8 IS to go with it. I could even buy the canon 24-70 f2.8 and keep the 24-105 for a backup then.

Sound ok?

Matt

Sounds like a pukka plan to me!

The 24-105 is a tremendous piece of kit.

Why are you getting a 50D only to sell it next year?
Why not go straight in for the 5D? Unless of course you will keep both?

Hi,

I would go straight for the 5dMkII but it would skint me for xmas , and i need a camera for xmas so i can get a 50d for £700 and am sure i could sell it for say £550 only a month or so old so will only lose £150 and could actually go straight for the 5dMkII aftger xmas then?

Hi,

Sounds reasonable!

I was thinking of doing something similar to that, and selling my 40D and wide angle for a 5D with the 24-105. 24mm on a full frame is still pretty wide.....

Go for it mate, sounds like a good plan!

Cheers Andy for the replies.

The 24-105 on the 50d will be equivalent to 38-168 wont it (1.6 crop) so would i ever use below 38mm in a studio? , i cant see myself ever being so close as to need to?

Matt

The 24-105 is my main studio lens, if you get yourself one, you'll have a great combination.

I got a full frame camera, have to warn you about the wide part of the 24-105 L, it does distort and vignette quite badly. Hence my recent purchase of the 17-40mm.

Or buy a used 5D classic now...

:plusone: its still a great performer

Used 5D for about £700, then get the 24-70mm f2.8, plus 85mm f1.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 IS at a later date
