Yes
hi all just wondering how essential a ring flash is for macro for that extra detail, any comments appreciated

Not essential at all... In fact can produce awful light with out diffusion please check the macro setups in the Macro section of the forum under Nature > macro and close-up

A ringflash is fine for even, flat lighting on two dimensional subjects but it's not good for creativity. A twinlight or offset and diffused lighting is going to give you more options for typical closeup subjects.

cheers anything to look for in a twin light
I'd guess that the Nikon R1C1 is a good starting point but you can achieve something for a lot less outlay if you're not bothered about it looking so tidy.

is the nikon sb29 twin light any good

It looks to be a ring flash type construction so see post#3 above. (I'm not well versed in Nikon gear)

I've just bought a Canon ring flash. Have given up on the various DIY set ups I tried and gone for something that is easier to handle, quick to set up and will allow me to get started in macro.

My previously very limited skills in macro have improved just from buying this.

Hopefully trying out the various options of different light outputs from each tube will allow more creativity when I develop the skill of hand holding a bit more.

It seems that the twin flash set ups are more versatile but perhaps a bit harder to get the best out of.

FWIW I have to confess that I am looking forward to my Adaptalux set up which I should receive in November.

Me too, Chas....it looks like it'll give some fantastic opportunities.
