I use this on my Sony- for insects and the like ( never used for Portraits though)

That is an LED setup and not true flash. FWIW, I own a Nikon R1C1 macro flash kit which costs over $700 new/$400 used... it's a more advanced twin flash version of a ring light. And I never use it. My preference is for a speedlight in a small softbox; or multiple remotely located flashes.Ok. I understand horses for courses etc and having never owned a ring flash I appreciate the advice. However why the great difference in price compared to THIS?

I really should sell that R1C1 kit...

Ringflash used for portraits leaves the subjects eye with a brilliant white doughnut that looks indescribably ugly, unless it's removed in post. Otherwise I'd agree with Steven.
Nope it is not an LED it is two flash tubes, agree with you totally on the speed light route. That is an LED setup and not true flash.
Then how does it do the "full light steady on" mode? I guess it could be the high frequency pulse like a speedlight's modeling light function... either way...Nope it is not an LED it is two flash tubes, agree with you totally on the speed light route.
I agree with you but for portraits it's a bit of a one trick pony like circular fish eye lenses imoRingflash for portraits gives a unique look. I think you have to choose your 'subject' and styling carefully.......like I did here? Just taken on Sunday

It definitely helps that she has her eyes shut. I don't mind the look otherwise, but that doughnut in the eyes makes me want to reach for a big stick.Ringflash for portraits gives a unique look. Other than the omni directional shadow/halo, which isn't all that different from what you get from a pop-up flash, what's unique about it?Ringflash for portraits gives a unique look.
That's interesting, I've only seen his video where he does the actual lining of the diffusers but now says that they ship already lined. Out of interest why did you find the need to reline them and what did you reline them with?I have those diffusers, I needed to place further diffusion material inside, and now have very good diffused light.
It’s probably an exact copy! I always find manuals to be total gibberish and this one is no exception. I’ll ask my 3 year old granddaughter to help meThat looks very similar to my old Nikon set up.
