I'm interested in buying a ring flash, but there seems to be a big difference in prices. The cheaper ones seem to be LED, and wondered if they are good enough for Macro work. Any advice would be useful.

LED ones are Ring Lights not Ring Flashes, they are on continuously on, each half can be switched on/off.

They are usually underpowered as well, compared to a ring flash.

A good dedicated TTL Macro Flash is the Metz 15 MS1....about £250

I had a Marumi ring flash and it was very good, however I managed to break it by lifting the flash head when the body was stuck in the bag. I then went with a couple of similar ones that were around £65-75 off ebay but the build quality wasn't great and they were only TTL when the camera was in auto mode. I eventually went with a Sigma EM-140 DG twin flash and that is excellent. It's not cheap but it is an amazing bit of kit. As it's a twin flash you can have one side off and one on or vice versa, you can also rotate the head so you can get some really good lighting effects from it and you can also alter the power output from it with full manual controls if you don't want it on TTL all the time. I usually have it on TTL and then just alter the power with FEC and it's given me some terrific photos from it and my 100 f2.8L macro lens.
