My sigma 70-300mm is no more:'(. The gears are stripped and the warranty has recently finished...typical. Oh well, excuse for a new quality lens then! Oh, but the dilemma now...I am looking to buy a new lens, but with the money I would spend I could upgrade to an A700! What to do...?:cuckoo:

There is no real point to this post...just lamenting..

Unlucky mate. I wish this would happen with my Tamron 70-300 it would give me an excuse to replace it a nice new different lens

It should cost £70-80 to have it fixed / serviced by Sigma, a LOT cheaper than a new lens :)

Thanks mrgrubby, I will have a serious look at that. Won't be letting the missus know as that will blow my chance of 'flashing some cash' for a new lens/body;). She does know that the lens still operates in MF mode, and will probably be none the wiser. Or is that too devient? :p

I have just dug the invoice out...it would appear I was previously incorrect with my dates. I bought the lens second hand and it was originally bought from Microglobe on 11/07/2008 and there is a 1yr warranty. The invoice, however, is in the original purchaser's name. Do you think they would honour it?

I have now emailed Microglobe to see if they will honour the warranty. I dare say the spelling mistakes on their site don't fill me with professional expectations.

Absolutely and without question

Doesn't matter whose name the invoice is in.

Cheers Richard. I am going to ring them up tomorrow and not bother about the email reply as time is fleeting...

Oh heck!
I too have an A300, and I had just decided on getting the Sigma 70-300 after deliberating for a couple of months. My husband has the Olympus Zuiko 70 - 300 lens which is supposed to be made by Sigma, and I have been impressed by the results.
I thought the gear stripping problem was something that occurred with the A700 not the A300. Back to the drawing board for me then. Or do you think Sigma have sorted this problem with more recently manufactured Sony fit 70-300?
Anyway I hope you get yours fixed under warranty Grayman

Thanks heidfirst. You'd think Sigma would sort out the problem and not continuing selling lenses that don't really seem fit for purpose, although presumably this doesn't happen to every Sony fit Sigma lens? If that is the case, then I guess I either take a chance, and hope that if the gears do get stripped it happens within warranty period, or just steer clear of Sigma, which certainly restricts the choice of lenses for Sony DSLR's.
Out of interest, does anyone know if the gear stripping (if it is going to happen) does so within a certain number of images taken? Thinking about it unless that lens is on the camera continuously, it's probably hard to tell..... Stupid question of the day!!:cuckoo:
Hmm ..... more thinking to do for me!

I have a Sigma 100-300mm DL and I so far have had no problems with it on my A200 (Apart form the fact that is ****** ***** *****), I have been told by a fellow Sony user to never touch a Sigma with anyone else's barge pole let alone your own but The Siggy 70-300 APO DG Macro is a good lens for the price and im always temped by it.

don't think that I've seen 1 reported on an A900 yet though

Probably cause A900 users dont need to look at Budget lenses

Oh dear - I had a few more Sigma's lined up as future presents for me, as the Sony's are out of the frame price wise.
I have tried a couple of Tamron 70-300's, in different stores, but all with all 3 I found the zoom too stiff to turn without a lot of effort (I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus so it really was a big problem for me).
The close focusing of the Sony 75 - 300 is not close at all, and in an ideal world I would like better than the Sony's 1.5M.
Maybe I should reconsider the Tamron 28-300 (unless of course all Tamrons have stiff zooms!)
Sorry Grayman I have hijacked your thread! Let us know how you got on phoning Microglobe

I personally think if Greyman gets good after sale service in regards to the gears being stripped then it could be worth getting the Sigma while saving up for something else. Does anyone know Sigma's stance on this problem?

No problem wellyboot. Well I phoned Microglobe this morning and got through to some foreign chappie who could barely speak english. After a couple of frustrating minutes trying to explain the problem and what I wanted, I asked if they or Sigma would honour the warranty and whether there would be any expense on my part. The answer I got was the chappie taking my my name and number promising to get back to me after he spoke with Sigma...I await the call. I am going to ring them again tomorrow to see whether there has been any progress.

I must say I have had nothing but excellent service from Sigma. They have resolved the issue going forwards but obviously there is plenty of old stock still out there. Watch yourself with microglobe, they sold me a Sigma 24-70 last year that turned out to be a grey import.

As a side note, with the A700 you can change the AF speed to slow and this will prevent the gear stripping problem. I have tested in fast and slow AF and really can't tell the difference.

IIRC microglobe often sell grey imports therefore Sigma will not recognise the warranty. You would have to deal with Microglobe.

Additionally the goods were bought by another person therefore the Warranty is a "contract" between the seller and buyer. They may not honour it as it may be considered void.
Just something to consider

Just a quick minor update. I have both spoken to Microglobe again (and received a reply to my email...to be fair it landed up in my spam folder and they answered quite efficiently) and they have told me to send the lens and they will repair it.

Hmm, sounds like a grey import to me, otherwise you would be able to send it straight to Sigma.

Hi Grayman
I hope it all gets done quickly for you.

As an aside I emailed Sigma with my concerns about the reliability of their 70-300 DG APO lens with my Sony A300. This is the response I got:

"Thnak you for your E-mail.

The overly powerful AF motor can cause damge to lenses, so we would always suggest to set the camera AF to normal when using this lens on these particualr cameras to cut down on the risk of the Sony camera damaging the lens."

The thing is, I don't seem to be able to change the AF on the A300. Can anyone tell me how to do this please?

Thanks wellyboot. Did Sigma not perhaps have the A300 mixed up with A700? As far as I know you can change the AF settings on an A700 to slow, not so with our A300s (as far as I know).

You are indeed correct. 4 out of the 6 lenses I use regularly are Sigma so it is quite important to me that I can change the AF to slow. When they repaired my 24-70, they used new improved parts to prevent the problem reoccurring but obviously that is of no help to the existing Sigma lenses out there. :(

Ah - it does sound like they have doesn't it! So really no way of preventing the problem that way!
I may well take a chance, and hope if it does happen it does within warranty period!
Thanks Grayman

Just a quick update. I sent my lens onto Microglobe who have now sent it onto Sigma for repairs. Guess that means it is not a grey import/product?! No idea of any return time yet :(

It still could be a grey import. If it is, Microglobe will just pay for the repair as they did with mine.

C'mon fabs...I am trying to be positive..lol. In any case I don't mind, I quite like the lens and I probably would not be able to distinguish the difference in the lens or photos taken with it anyways :)

Oh absolutely. It doesn't really matter either way as it will be repaired at someone elses cost and the repair will now be guaranteed by Sigma for 6 months.
