Hi all,

I end up walking a lot and using public transport a lot and am a bit bored of carrying everything. I paticularly do a fair bit of location and lighting stuff with speedlights.

I like the idea of a peli as its armoured and can be sat on and used as a block/step easy (i'm a bit short sometimes :D)

I need to fit a 5dII, a 70-200/2.8L, a 28-70L, a 50/2.4 and a sigma 15-30 (similar to 28-70L). Long term I intend to add a second body and backup lenses maybe some nice primes.

At least 3 speedlights, space for more is better :D
Some ultra portable lightstands and at least one proper tall one, umbrellas, softboxes snoots grids and black card. Being able to tie my tripod to the side would be good too.

Getting calumet stuff would be nice as I have a 20% off card.

Sizes of peli confuse the hell outta me :D

this one from calumet looks like a nice roller?
peli 1510?

Any thoughts/experiences?
 
daaamn warehouse express overcharge for peli... see ebay or jit pak ;)

peli 1510 is well rated, won't fit big tall stands but will the manfrotto nanos, but they'll eat a fair chunk of the space. It's apparently way smaller than you imagine, can't see it happily eating 2 body + lenses + some light stands :/
 
I have that very case (calumet)

Had it for a year now and I really like it. I did have a 1Ds a 5D and 7 lenses in it and kept my lighting gear in a lowepro shoulder bag. Now I have slightly different kit (sorry!) I can get both D700's three zooms, 2 primes and two BB900's in it.

It also expands with a space that you can easily get a small overnight style bag in :)

It's a fair weight when full but just about carryable up a flight of stairs.

calumet looks better for strapping stuff to, have you tried that ali?

Trying to consolidate everything I might need in one bag that rolls to make getting to shoots/the train easier. Not too fussed about stairs as they're usually short distances and I'd have it all on my back for miles lese :D

Dave do you think I'd fit everything bar the stands/brollies/softboxes (pop up variety btw) in the peli, as I could get that and a hockey bag or other shoulder type long bag
 
I use an old 1650 Peli case with no foam inserts - just fit the kit into your backpack and ram that into the Peli case along with laptop, cables, extension leads, hard-drives etc. Pad it all out with spare towels and socks and away you go.
Put in in with the hold luggage (keep one camera with you in your carry-on luggage in case terrorists storm the aircraft - if you survive, those images will be worth a fortune...).
The newer ones have two sets of two wheels spaced further towards the corners - the older ones have only two wheel set further inboard and that case (mine) has a tendency to tip when traversing rough ground.
Be advised - these are great on concrete, tarmac or pavement but an absolute chrome-plated [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] on rough ground, sand or gravel...

I call mine the Albatross...carrying it full-up on and off helicopters with all my other kit is an educational experience - but nothing else will do - my kit would be in ruins by now without it...
Utterly bomb-proof, I can stand on it, sit on it, use it as a work-table. Waterproof, dust proof and Arkady-proof...need I say more?
 
Other option I've seen people use is actually a cricket bag. Believe it or not it's the ideal length for lighting stands and usually big enough to put a backpack full of gear in too. Greys do one I think and it's on rollers. :)

did some googling and its a bit small for me :(
 
looked up the 1650, need to think if I want peli or calumet roller now

Thinking lightstands would go nicely in the front pocket sticking out the top, any thoughts Ali (aka please try and let me know if thats not too cheeky :D)

armour vs portability :(
 
I'll pull out a couple of lighting stands later and try it. Not sure they will go in the front without falling all over the place or it being too tight.

I'll try it tonight and let you know :)
 
You wouldn't be able to stand/sit on the Calumet?
 
I've thought about getting a fisherman's trolley. Might be a bit eccentric to haul it onto a bus, though.

I use a £25 wheeled holdall, either with a plastic storage bin or my posh bags. Light stands and tripod in the bag for my background stands. Background stands are getting on for 120cm.

Has two end pockets, so the main compartment may be 100cm long.

More goalie bags than you can shake a (hockey) stick at!
 
I've been tempted by hocky/cricket bags for a while. What I might do is asses the double fold lightstands I have ordered and if they work well get a big peli with dividers I can fit it all inside as they're v short
 
Got my Calumet bag out and I would not like to put lightstands in the front. Standing upright the front pocket is a bit wobby, it's amost 2 ft deep so the lightstands would stick out the top a fair bit and the pocket at the top is about 8in out from the top of the bag. I reckon the stands would be wobbling about a fair bit and probably quite unstable.

Yeah it does :D

I've ordered in some double fold ones and if they're good I might try getting a big peli and putting them inside.

I would caution against sharing space between your camera gear and the stands. Say you bundle two, three, four or more bits of hardware together. That's a substantial mass that it would be better to have outside the protective case.
