Hello,

Obviously it's that time of year we can treat ourselves and I am a bit wary of buying anything, mainly because I find something better/cheaper the next day.

I'm looking to buy the Nissin Di622 flash gun and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens for Xmas. I'm pretty confident for the £100-a-piece price range they can't be beaten. But I thought I would ask the experts before commiting ... So ... Would anyone recommend any other flashguns or fast lenses? I could stretch to £120-a-piece.

Thanks!

The Nissin gets good rep and offers a lot for the money

50 1.8 gets mixed reports. It's great virtue is that it's f/1.8 and very cheap, and can do shallow depth of field and low light like no zoom ever can. It's also cheaply made, but sharp and there's nothing else like it for the price. However, unless you actually use f/1.8 and can get along with a 50mm focal length which is not brilliantly useful on a crop format camera, it will do nothing for you.

It's good for portraits on a crop camera, where shallow DoF is often nice to have. And it goes quite well on extension tubes for macro (Kenko, £120, Xmas pressy?).

Instead of the nissin take a look at the jessops brand flashgun as well, think its about 99 quid might not be any better but its worth a look!

Thanks for the response guys!

It was actually someone at Jessops who told me to go for the Nissin! That's loyalty for ya.

I was going to use the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II mainly for portrait work, so that review has sold it to me!

Canon 50mm MkI - that much better built than the MkII, and funnily enough there's one for sale at the moment
I would love a MkI, but if it's the one on ebay I'm a bit scared by the fungus!
