Rubber Lens Hoods

Hi,

I'm setting up a new camera bag and I'm finding the hard plastic lens hoods a bit of a tight fit. I've seen Hama rubber lens hoods (at 7dayshop iirc) and they sound like a good way of maximising space given their flexibility vs hard plastic hoods.

My inclination would be to keep the hard Canon hood for the 24-70 and employ rubber hoods for the UWA and whichever 70-200 zoom (probably the f4 IS) I buy in the future.

I'd be grateful for anybody's experiences with this style of hood. Will be using the camera for wildlife and fishing shots in hot climes, so glare will be an issue.

Cheers

imo the (main) /real/ use of a lens hood is in offering protection for the lens, and rubber ones offer very little really :/

you can always reverse the hoods on lenses for storage, and just put them back on the right way, if space is an issue.

Also, bear in mind that UWA lenses can't have much of a hood on or you'll get vignetting.

It's the diameter of the hoods that's the problem with most bags.

Thanks for the responses gents.

Nikon do a concertina rubber hood (HR-2) that fits a 52mm filter thread.

Thanks for that, I'll take a look and see if they do larger versions.

They still significantly increase the overall diameter of the lens, hence the idea of using flexible rubber hoods.

I was actually wondering about copying the profile of the hard plastic hood on the UWA by cutting up a rubber hood with a dremel :D

Precisely. Looking at the bag I might get away with the 67mm hood inside the 77mm UWA hood and then drop the 70-200 inside the stack. Reduces the number of hoods by 1 but I'd really like to stick a flexible hood on at least the 70-200, if not all of them.

Hi & Welcome

I think the rubber hoods may be slightly narrower, but when I compared my old one to the solid hood, there wasn't much in it, in terms of diamater. Big difference in length as the rubber hood collapsed on itself, but the solid hood can fit reversed on the lens itself.

Personally, I never got along with the rubber hoods

Hope this helps :)

agreed i allways use hoods, but getting them in the bag is a problem

be careful with rubber ones i had one slip of its ring onto the lens and stopped it autofucusing,it was dark and i though my camera was broke.

Thanks Andyred, I'm hoping that the rubber hoods will be flexible enough to squash into the available space.

If I stick with the plastic hoods I suspect that the Tokina UWA hood will probably be able to sit outside the 70-200 f4 and its hood with all three in a stack, giving me a bit more room.

I'm trying to squeeze everything into an Urban Disguise 30 and it seems to work, just :D. The main problem is that I haven't bought the 70-200 yet, so this is all based on sticking a 75-300 II f4-5.6 USM and guesstimating vs the increased size of the grey lens.

Maybe try a card mockup of the 70-200's hood?

You could use one folding rubber hood with all your lenses, using stacked step rings, if required, though all the screwing is a faff ;) The UWA would most likely need a larger diameter to avoid vignetting, and wouldn't benefit from the petal design. I would think the folding ones would be too floppy, if cut. You could use a "French flag" (piece off card to shade the lens) and in fact should with an UWA in many circumstances.

 That's a bloody good idea! Who on earth came up with the idea for that site? And my other half accuses me of OCD like behaviour........ I'll definitely make up a few emergency hoods from card. Thanks for the link!

I've only just bought the UWA to go with the crop frame 7D, so I'm a complete beginner with this type of lens. I think this is the one I need to practice with the most. I'll do a search on French flag and see what they're all about. Cheers
