Rubbish Cokin Filters - Can I take back?

Yes
I bought a P153 and a P121 from Jessops. One is a ND filter, the other a graduated ND filter. Both of them give a magenta hue to my photos. Having googled this it seems it is fairly common. I am thinking of taking them back to get my money back - I presume that I would be entitled to as they are sold as "neutral" but is there a possibility that Jessops could argue the toss?

Cite "not fit for purpose" and you're good for a refund so long as it's been a reasonably short length of time and the goods are undamaged and resaleable.

Surely if you are returning them due to a manufacturing fault, they do not need to be resaleable (ie packaging etc doesnt need to be intact)... the shop should not be reselling faulty goods!!

Under the Sale of goods act... if an item is not fit for purpose then the retailer is legally obliged to give a full refund provided the damage has not been done by the consumer and it is a genuine manufacturing fault.

Cokin filters are notorious for this, I don't know if some are better than others. If you want something more neutral go for HiTech or Lee, they're more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Could you perhaps post an example so I can see the effect? I've used cokin filters for ages but nothing has struck out as being a colour cast.

Are you shooting film?

If nit, this is elementary to fix. Can even do it in-camera with a picture control adjustment, though personally I'd do it in post with a preset in ACR.

This is the ND 8 filter.

If you bought them from Jessops within the last 28 days just take them back under the "no quibble" returns policy...

I have a similar problem having recently bought 3 Cokin ND Grads. 2 of them are fine but one has a Magenta cast - they're all going back to the retailer on Monday :)

I'll be looking for Hi-Tech ones to replace them.

Jessops gave me my money back with no problems at all. I had gone armed with my camera in order to prove to them what was happening but it wasn't needed.

Thats a definate magenta cast, I was expecting a very slight red cast in the shadows but not a bright red image.
