Rubbish weather 'togging

Lately it seems to have been dull dull dull as far as the weather is concerned. I've barely out with the camera in a while and when I have, the light has been so flat and the sky so monotone it's not really been worth shooting anything.

I'm after suggestions. What should I shoot when the weather's like this?

Long eposures, there is no harsh shadws to get in the way and spoil shots...

I have the same problem, my next lens will be a macro one to help in these dull moments but that won't be until the summer at least!

I even went down to the beach yesterday (boy was it cold!!) but only took one shot, just couldn't get inspired :(

Bump the ISO and do monochrome Street Photography. That's what I've been doing for the past couple of days. I love it. :)

I'm pretty much in the same position, hardly taken a photo for the last 2 months...

I've started to consider a few more architecture options in nearby Chester, maybe a visit to York or Lincoln might give you some possibilities..just a thought

I know what you mean, it has been very very dull lately, no sky no nothing, but then last night about 4.30pm this gorgeous red sun appeared out of nowhere! i didnt even have time to get my camera and get to a location before it settled and dissapeared, talk about teasing lol!

Who says you need to have great sunlight?

That takes balls, something that i'm laking at the moment and that probably goes for quite a few here!

There's always something to take photo's of...

Nice sunrise this morning - just needed a decent location

You get used to. Learn to shoot from the hip. Most of the local market people and shop owners see me out on the high street near where I live all the time and they don't seem to mind. I haven't had any dodgy moments yet though. Maybe I've been lucky or maybe I haven't pushed it hard enough. :D

Literally from your hip? As in don’t raise the camera just point it in the general direction and shoot? How many do you end up keeping then  :D

It is tricky at first, and you don't end up with that many keepers. What I've done is just keep clicking off whilst pointing the camera in a few slightly different directions. One of them is bound to come out. :D I only do this for wide-ish shots and I keep the the aperture narrow to increase DOF and ISO a little high too.

I've gotten better at it in not that long a time; maybe 2-3 outings and you'll start seeing an improvement. I rarely make eye-contact too, no one suspects you've taken their photo if you haven't looked at them.

Other times I've looked straight at them, held the camera up to eye-level and fired a couple off; then smiled, waved and walked off. :) People on buses are great, I can stick the lens right at them just before the bus drives off and then they're gone! :D

It depends on the situation.

And besides, if anyone gives me trouble, I've got the 'Brick' 24-70L to defend myself with. :D

I am soon to go to London for a day of street photography.

I am planning on going on my own and just exploring, but I would imagine there are a few people on here who live in or around London. Is street photography something best done alone?

If you have the bottle then you could go it alone, but I had a lot of fun within a group. Either way, it should make a difference to the photos.

I haven't gone with anyone else before, but I can imagine that it should be easier and possibly give you a bit more courage.

Might give this a go at some point, although i'll keep away from buses. I work for a Bus company and don't want them thinking i've become a Bus nut!!

Oh and another thing - your strap must be really long if you shoot from the hip? Mine would be more like shooting from the chest - maybe i need to lengthen it!!

Yeah, I used to have the strap at the longest setting and it was almost long enough but not quite. I don't keep the camera around my neck. I used to wrap the strap around my hand and walk with it down by my side, it was much more covert.

Now, I use a camera hip bag and I rest the camera on top of the bag like it's resting there whilst I'm walking around. But I keep my finger on the shutter and I fire away and no one even notices. It's good because it keeps the camera nice and steady so long as you're not walking.

Oh, and I also just use a hand strap now too.
