I am currently have a dilema. I seam to be collecting bags:D

I keep my gear in a Tamrac Expedition 8 and love it. A large bag but great for my gear but to large to carry on as hand luggage.

Would a Tamrac Expedition 6 or 7 be any better to carry on or anything smaller?

I am looking to carry canon 500mm F4 IS, 50D, 7D, 100-400, 70-200 couple of converters and 20-35. Would it all fit in.

Does not need to be a Tamrac though. Problem I have none of the local shops have them to look at:(
 
Not sure about either of the bags in question.

But I have the ThinkTank airport acceleration V.2 and my stuff fits in easily with plenty of room remaining (5DII ,7D,17-40,100-400,70-200 2.8 and 100 Macro IS),and it's international carry-on size too,at least it is with the laptop case removed.

Just checked it out and seams that it should join the list to be considered as it will take the 500mm. Found some good pictures of it with equipment in including a 500mm:)
 
The maximum length of hand lugage is 22 inches so what is the overall length of the lens and the usable internal length / volume of whichever bag you end up with. I faced a similar problem with a tripod and found the best option was to put it in my suitcase in the hold perhaps thats your best option for the 500mm.
 
Thanks for the suggestion Peter but they way suitcases get thrown about I am a bit worried about the lens getting damaged
 
No I wouldn't entertain putting any of it in the checked luggage.

I'm using my iPhone for access to the site at the moment until I return home tomorrow afternoon,but if you're still unsure of the room inside I will gladly take a shot of my kit inside the bag to show you what kind of space my stuff uses it would be if any help?

I've never held the 500/4 personally so I can't really give an answer to it fitting with everything else you require...
 
I have an older Lowepro photo trekker here for my general camera storage and it is absolutely huge. I got it cheap as the zips didn't work properly (and I chopped off the shoulder & waist straps).

The lowepro site doesn't show them any more but does show the newer version showing external dimensions of 14.6W X 15D X 21.5H in./37 X 38 X 54.5 cm
 
Look at the think tank airport take off, wheeled bag that also has backpack straps, I can fit my 600 f4 in there with a couple of bodies and other lenses assuming I put the huge lens hoods in checked in luggage. Carry on sized for most airlines
 
Tamrac 5 fits is ok. least it was 2 years ago when I last took one on
 
I looked through a lot of bags a while back for my father as he wanted the largest ruck sack camera back he could take on as hand luggage, he also wanted one that had a general storage area. Turned out to be the Lowepro fastpack 350 that suited the bill perfectly, it was a lot cheaper than some of the others too.

I see you in swindon, harris photography in chipping norton isnt too far from you and has a massive selection of bags you can try out.

Not on all airlines, by any stretch of the imagination!

The Department for Transport used to specify a maximum size of 56 x 45 x 25 cm, but in April 2010 they abolished that rule and let airlines decide for themselves.

Most airlines allow carry-on bags up to 50-55 cm long, but they vary quite markedly in the other dimensions. For example BA allows 56 x 45 x 25, but Emirates has a limit of 55 x 38 x 20.

However, the weight limit is far more important - and far more variable across airlines. BA allows up to 23kg, but Emirates only 7kg and Virgin only 6kg. And some countries impose limits which apply to all flights into and out of that country (even if the airline would otherwise have a higher limit) - for example Germany only allows 8kg and New Zealand only 7kg.

The OP's gear list comes to about 10kg, conservatively estimated, not counting the bag. So he will need to be VERY careful about which airlines he uses and where he flies, if he wants to take all that lot!

Do the airline check in desks actually ever weigh hand luggage though?
It's never happened to me they usually glance over and just make sure you have 1 bag etc.
 
Queasyjet are the best. As long as you can press it over your head they are fine with any weight.

Get the biggest ThinkTank accepted by your airline and work from there.

Or worst case, get a carry on approved suitcase and wrap each item individually. 4 wheel suitcases are the best because you can run really fast with them.

Tamrac used to make padded wrapping pouches under the RAPP brand. I bought some at a bargan price at SWPP :D
 
Forgot to say another vote for ThinkTank, I have two of there bags (Streetwalker Pro & Retrospective 20) both I doubt would fit your 500mm but both very well put together and thought out designs.

Never heard of them but close they are so I will travel for a look on Wednesday:) May well finaly get me to get a bag that sticks with me;)

Would be great if you could. I am a little unsuse:thumbs:

Lowepro bags for me are out. Had 4 different types and did not like them. Still got one that never gets used, must list it. Good bags just not for me.

Emirates in Manchester and Birmingham weigh everyones hand luggage if it looks like it could hold more than a just a purse / wallet, passport and keys etc. We have probably flown with them about 15 times over the past 8 years or so, and each time the hand luggage of everyone in the que has been weighed in the UK, but never on the return journey. :cuckoo: They are sticklers for hand luggage being over weight too.

Edited to add that I can't help with a bag choice, sorry.

OK I will take a photo and post up tomorrow morning.

As studioworks said,try Morris photographic in chipping norton as that's where I got my one from,but it's worth calling them before setting off as they don't always have everything in stock.
 
At least I would post a photo if I could get one of the several links on my flickr page to work.
No idea why it won't work as I've sent pics to forums loads of times before :(

All I'm getting is the URL address itself on my preview post and not the picture?
