Going out in about an hour to try my first amature rugby shots,if the game is still on.
Will be using the 400d & 100-400mm L F4.5-5.6 lens,any advice on settings would be great,its sunny just now,but a bit windy.
TV mode with 1/500th set
ISO auto until that starts to underexpose then 1600 after that
Continuous burst mode
Centre weighted average exposure
AI Servo focus with all points enabled
Make sure high iso noise reduction mode is OFF
RAW mode only.
Using * button for focus (custom function)
100-400mm lens is about right (ive got 55-200 and its a little short for stuff across the pitch). f/4-5.6 is slow. I have the same problem. It means high ISOs and underexposed shots late afternoon so some PP is required.
I shoot rugby with my 450d
full manual (spot metering on so i can check exposure on the fly)
an iso of 400 working down as the light fails
min aperture (f2.8)
shutter speeds over 1/1000
AF servo
continuous shooting
RAW
the lens is an 80-200 f2.8 L
I shall have to try using * for AF that sounds useful gnirts
Im still undecided as to whether i like it or not. Some days i think the * AF is great, others i think it makes no difference. Certainly worth trying. Its "different" but whether its better or not i don't know. I like the idea of separating focus from exposure but if it matters in practice for sport i dont know. If you're using full manual so half press isnt locking exposure anyway im not sure it will make any difference at all.
I gave up on full manual as the light changes so often on the grounds here (some areas in shade, some in sun, lights aren't even if they're on at all, clouds etc). The f/2.8 i bet really helps though. f/5.6 at 200mm is killing me.
