Am close to pulling the trigger on a Sony RX100. For ages I was taken with the Fuji X10 but the RX100 images just look better to me now.

My predicament is thus: I want a small, pocketable camera with nigh on SLR quality and good low light performance. The Fuji X10/20 are both too big. The Canon S110 doesn't have the good IQ of the Sony but is the right size.

There are two things holding me back; the price (450 for a compact!!!) and the possibility of a new model very soon.

I go to Vegas on 7 July and do not want to take my SLR kit with me but my trusty power shot a570 is showing its age.

So, do I just bite the bullet and get the Sony or is there anything else out there? I don't mind spending 450 quid, just begrudge it if the new model comes out soon....

If you are always wondering what's around the corner you will never buy anything.

If size is critical not much matches he RX100 at the moment (especially if needing a zoom lens)
 
If its replacement is announced on Thursday then I might hold off for a price drop. Do you think that might happen before I depart for the states....
 
I doubt it.
If you need it by then buy what you need now & spend a few days getting to know it before your trip so that you don't miss things on it.
 
I can't see the RX100 dropping in price any time soon as it appears to have no direct competitors, so demand will not really drop until the new model actually ships.
 
Hmm that's thrown a curveball at it. Does the canon mirror less have a retractable lens? My DSLR kit is all canon...
 
No just a standard size zoom with the Canon which is similar priced too the Nex btw the you get a free Sony case with the Nex over at Wex i noticed :D..
I don't own the Nex just thought with that compact zoom it looked like a nice alternative too a decent compact :)
 
I don't think it will fit in to a pair of jeans pockets though will it? Might go have a look tomorrow, price is excellent.
 
I know the RX100 would but even if the NEX with PZ lens would do i personally would be wary of doing just incase it damaged the lens :thinking:
Id imagine from look of it a inside pocket on a jacket would be okay though or just have a small good fitting case too keep the size down.

I think the camerasize.com site is a bit misleading as it compares the nex3nl "body only" size with the RX100 - add the 16-50 lens and there is no way it will go in a jeans pocket!
 
You can't have everything I suppose. The Nex sensor is great (I am currently using an old Nex 5 with a 50 1.8 and the iq is better than any DSLR i have used for same money) and the body is tiny but put a lens on it and it won't fit in a jeans pocket comfortably.
 
I am looking at the NEX 6 and NEX 7 currently. Love the ability to use legacy glass on these puppies.
 
Are you also buying a D800 or 5Dmk3? You sound like you have some money to burn :)
 
will wait until the end of the week before pulling the trigger on the rx100 I think. All the CSC cameras need a bag which negates the point of what I am trying to achieve; something I can put in jeans/shorts pockets and take out with me to get great snaps.

The RX100 and S110 are the only two cameras I have seen that I could pocket that produce good enough output quality/size and of those, the RX100 is miles ahead in quality.
 
There's also the Fuji X-F1, a compact version of the X-10.

Yes it has a smaller sensor, but a slightly longer zoom and a faster lens at F2-F2.5 Vs the RX100's F1.8 - F4.9

If the new sony comes out with a faster lens and slightly longer zoom whilst retaining the quality & sensor of the RX100 then its going to be a killer in the premium compact market.

The X10 has the faster lens, the XF-1 is more similar to RX100 lens, aperture wise and is at 4.9 min at long end.

I had an XF-1 and it is very pocketable and the IQ is good (As good as the S110 I would imagine. Got mine from Fuji refurb for £200)
It was ultimately too small and fiddly to grip and use zoom lens.

Sounds to me like you know you want the RX100 so stop dithering about and go and buy it :)

The RX100 is a little gem. But it's that "little" part I didn't get along with. I found it too small, even after I added a grip. But, it is your best bet for pocket-friendly + great image quality and all the usual controls.

well, the news is in - the RX100 M2 won't replace but run alongside the RX100 at a premium.
& God forbid but it looks like that premium might be worth paying from initial previews (1 stop improvement in IQ, tilt LCD, hotshoe, wifi)!
