same lens in film vs digital

Could someone please explain the physics beyond this -

I took some pics with the same lenses on digital and film. film seems to be much sharper (could it be because my digi is a cropped sensor ? )

oh ! and another one - If I shoot with a flashgun lets say wide open, the flash shot will be sharper than the same shot wide open without. I understand that the light is edgier etc, but still, is it because it's sort of a shock light ? a powerful blast, so it won't blur ?

thanks,
D.

For the sharpness I'd hazard a guess that it's because digital files are not sharpened in camera unless you deliberately set sharpening in the camera functions. I'd imagine that the type of film could have an impact, although I'm no expert on that.

As for the flash, I'm not sure - maybe it's because you're using a higher shutter speed and also the flash will freeze any movement?

but I don't get that sharpness shooting outside with even higher speeds. maybe it's clarity not the sharpness.

It sounds like it's the quality of the light.

Direct flash is notoriously hard and casts strong, sharp-edged shadows. Bright sun is similar. The same subject photographed on an overcast day will look very different, with soft or even non-existant shadows. It will look less sharp.

Film was sharper than digital with the same lens? What was the magic scanner and film that you used?

Unless there is a good reason your digital shot was poorly executed for whatever reason (focus, speed, light).

I know how my helios behaves on digital and when I got film back they seemed sharper. anyway this is just me mumbling about. I would need to compare them in the same condition/ place and time :)
