Samyang 10mm f/2.8 available from next month.

Was hoping this manual focus APS-C lens would be a cheaper alternative to the likes of the Sigma 10-20mm (as I mostly used that at 10mm when I had it) or the Tokina wide angle.

But at nearly £500 for the dslr version (only Nikon fit initially though) may as well get the Tokina for the same price (or Sigma for less) and have the benefits of AF and the full range of the zoom. A 10mm prime may be better image quality but the Tokina seems good enough to me (and the cheaper Sigma too although mine needed stopping down a fair bit to get across the frame sharpness). (The Samyang 14mm f/2.8 and fisheye lenses are £260.00 so I was hoping the 10mm would be a similar price.)

Do you really need AF with a 10mm lens, though? Most everything will be in focus most of the time, particularly once you've stopped down to f/4 or f/5.6.

No I don't need it - it's more that I was hoping the lack of it would make the Samyang cheaper as is the case with their other lenses. I have the Samyang 7.5 f3.5 fisheye and don't really miss having AF. But if the 10mm lens is the same price as the AF wide angle zooms then there is no real advantage in getting the Samyang when you can get the Tokina lens for the same price and AF might be useful when focusing on close-up objects - as you say though for most things everything from a few feet away to infinity will be in focus when you set the focus ring to around 1 metre and stop down a bit.

It's more that I sold my Sigma due to how little use it was getting but if a cheaper option was available that could justify getting it as it would be used for the occasional shot. At the moment I can use the fisheye as an ultra-wide by defishing it (hemi plug-in) but you lose a lot of the frame, especially if the camera is not completely level and the subject fairly central.
