Samyang 85mm f/1.4

Ok so my beloved Canon 85mm f/1.8 has somehow stripped all its gears. I have no idea how or why!

I am shooting another wedding in a few weeks, and have been offered a used Samyang f/1.4 as a stop gap. I know it's only MF but I've heard good things about the lens but haven't had the opportunity to try it as of yet and it would be a transaction by post as the seller is some distance away... Has anyone compared directly to the Canon f/1.8, or used them for weddings? I'm pretty sure the MF won't be an issue as ill be using my 50mm and 70-200 f/2.8 for most of the candids

I haven't compared against the canon, but I have with the Nikon 1.8 and sigma 1.4. It beats them both hands down.

Is so sharp its unbelievable.

It's actually a really good lens, sharp from wide open and easy to focus. How it performs compared to the Canon, I couldn't tell you I'm afraid.

The only gotcha is with manual focusing at wide apertures. You'll need a matte high precision focusing screen if you want to visualise what is in focus through the viewfinder.
