Hi,
Took my memory card (4gig sandisk ext3) out of my 40d tonight and put it in the card reader (like always) then got a message "you need to format this drive before use"
Tried in mem slot on different pc got same message! Then put card back in cam, turned on and it said"cannot create folder" then "no image" I know there were at least 20 pics on there. So I then formatted the card in cam and all seems well but do I TRUST the card now or bin it?:'(

The sandisk rescue software is pretty decent.... do you have the mini cd?

Nupe - unless you did a full zero format?

If just 'quick' then you should be ok to rescue a good percentage.

It gets worse!!! Just tried another card and the same thing!
Guess its the camera???

Please help!! Steve

Cheers Dave ,
I was just about to post that everything works fine on the desktop, but as soon as the card goes in the card reader and I plug that into the laptop everything goes haywire so I came to the same conclusion as you!

Can you recommend a good card reader! just stamped on the Jessops one....

After you've copied the images over from your card to your PC, do you simply delete the images from your card? or do you actually format it in the camera each time to wipe it?

After I've dumped the contents of the card to the computer, I *always* format the card in the camera in which I'm going to be using it before taking another shot.

If you just delete image files from your computer in the card reader, things can get fragmented and confused.

Sounds like good advice, thanks I'll do that in future.
