Ok...The fat guy in the fluffy red suit has given me the oppurtunity to invest a modest amount...
Problem is...Cant make mind up what to buy with my pennies!
Currently have a Canon 1000D with 18-55 IS,Sigma 70-300,and a nifty fifty.
Cash wise have around 500 quid to spend,and might be able to stretch a bit further..
Was looking at Canon EF 70-200 F/4 L USM,and was wondering if the IQ would be significantly better than the Sigma's?. (Cant afford the 2.8L ...)
Or...New body..specifically the 50D.
Would need to sell the 1000D and IS lens to get one,and not too sure if the new body would be the better idea,or better glass!
oooh the dilemma...
Will a 1000D get the best out of L series glass?,or do i upgrade the body first?
 
Keep the 1000d, you won't notice a significant increase in image quality - if any - with the 50d.

I know it's difficult to restrain yourself, but you really need some good glass first.

If I were you, I'd keep the 18-55 no matter what. It means you can sell the camera on at a later date in the state you purchased it.

What you really need to look at is what lens you use the most. Fill a gap.

Want to go wider? Get a wide lens.
Want to go longer? Get a longer lens.
70-300 not as sharp as you'd like? Get the Canon 70-300 IS or the 70-200 f/4.
Want a better standard lens? Could well look at getting maybe a second hand 17-55/2.8 IS or perhaps a second hand 24-105L.
 
I agree with foodpoison.

Unless you prefer the controls and handling of the xxD, keep the 1000D and the kit lens as it'd probably not bring in much if you tried to sell it and even if you don't use it often there may be occasions when you want to use a relatively cheapo lens or even keep it on your backup body if you do buy another camera at some point.

I'd wait until you begin to reach the limitations of the 1000d before upgrading to a better body. So I would definitely be investing the money into good glass as Sean suggested.

The 70-200L f4 will be a big step up from the Sigma your using at the moment. Remember, its not the camera that makes the difference, it's the lens attached to it...

Back to the OP, very difficult desicion, do you feel you've reached the limits of your 1000D, if so, definately upgrade the body, if not, then upgrade your glass so when you do reach the limits, you will have the quality of lenses required to get the best of your new body.

I've the 70-200 F4 and it's an absolute belter :thumbs:

To be honest-No i dont think i've hit the limits of the 1000D.
I think perhaps its the 50% more MP that got me dreaming...But then-As is clearly obvious from many images posted on here-MP isnt everything..
Think i'l be going for the 70-200 F/4L,It may not be quite as shiny as the 2.8,but as was said above-Will be a considerable upgrade from the Sigma.
