Yes, they are holes, it's a satsuma skin, cut in half, dried, then the holes cut then varnished and stitched back together with copper wire. Very odd. I've got a one made from a pear as well, we must have had them over 20 years, the girl that made them had her first exhibition after uni in the local library & we picked them up from there.
