have a nikon d90 and kit lens now (18-105VR)

saving for a new lens
most of my pictures are candid, family, baby pics at the moment

which would you choose or order in preference:
- nikon 50mm f1.8
- nikon 50mm f1.4
- nikon 35mm f1.8
or - tamron 28-75 f2.8?

would like to save for the right lens, but i could probably get a 50mm f1.8 sooner to play with but would mean i won't be able to afford the others for awhile.

i'm thinking of 50mm f1.8 @ £100 new something fun to play with sooner rather than later, but others have said the 35mm indoors is better due to focal range otherwise backed against a wall etc. and is sharper. no doubt the 50mm f1.4 would be even sharper, but will have the potential crop factor issue on focal range.

i had a 50mm 1.8 and sold it to fund a 35mm 1.8, because on cropped sensor cameras the 35mm turns out to be 52mm and this is better focal length and its razor sharp awesome lens, i`ll never ever sell it.

i`d hold out for a 35mm 1.8 if i were you.

I agree.

I now have a D90 with the 18-105VR lens and the 35mm f1.8 that I'm very happy with, so I'd recommend the 35mm f1.8 too.

I think it depends if you are taking the candid portraits with flash or not. If you are using flash the 18-105 at f4.5 will give you the same IQ as the f1.8 primes in the 35-50mm range at the same f stop.

have you considered the Nikon 35mm f2? Is full-frame compatible in case you upgrade in the future unlike the f1.8 which is a DX lens.

I have just got the 50mm 1.4 and am loving it, first couple of shots have really impressed me. I think it is going to become one of my favorite lenses

Used a 50mm 1.8 on my old d90, have the 1.4 afs now. Thought 50mm was perfect for baby shots, at times the 35mm would have been nice but overall 50mm fine. Think the 1.4 ads is a great lens and much sharper than 1.8 although 1.8 is great value.

playing around, 50mm would be good for baby shots but for candid/room/party shots indoors could be limiting
